chapter two
two halves of the same soulShauna Everleigh kept a mental list of promises she made to her sisters—and the ones she couldn't keep. She was always the responsible sister and had never known the feeling of having a mother, but if she had to guess, she'd say it felt the way she felt toward her younger sisters. From a very young age, Shauna held their world on her shoulders, even when Tatum's mischief got out of hand or Lenora's curious mind wandered off. She loved them with an intensity that left her breathless— so much that it hurt.
There was a quiet pride in being their anchor, a role she wore as naturally as her own skin. Leaving for Hogwarts had proven to be one of the hardest things she'd ever done. In one moment, she'd been there, holding their hands, and in the next, she was gone, on a train bound for a place far from them.
She remembered that first journey at eleven, sitting alone in a train carriage, clutching a tattered red notebook that belonged to Lenora. Her youngest sister had insisted she take it, filled with half-finished stories and scattered poems, little glimpses into her mind. "Fill the rest for me," Lenora had said with wide eyes. "So I can read them when you come home."
Now, Shauna sat with her legs crossed beneath her, staring at the words she had just written in scratchy handwriting, her eyebrows furrowed.
How strange it is to find freedom and yet feel emptier than before. How I wish I could be in two places at once.
She was lost in thought, idly twirling her pencil, when the sound of the carriage door sliding open snapped her back. A girl around her age stood in the doorway, her expression hesitant. She had curly, slightly unkempt copper hair and looked as if she was gathering her courage to speak."Hey, would it be okay if I sit here?" she asked, her voice soft. "All the other carriages are full."
Shauna slipped the notebook back into her bag, offering the girl a warm smile. "Of course you can! Come in."
The girl's shoulders visibly relaxed as she took the seat opposite her, sighing in relief. "Thank you. It was a bit intimidating, seeing everyone already in groups. I don't know anyone here."
"Me neither," Shauna replied, shaking her head. "I'm Shauna Everleigh."
"Margot Evans."
"Well," The blonde said with a grin, "at least now we both know somebody."
The two shared a smile just as the train began to shudder starting its journey.
Shauna and Margot remained friends for a long time after that day. By pure chance, they were sorted into Gryffindor together, though at the time, Shauna didn't fully understand what that meant. She only knew that she'd found a friend who was like her—a Muggle-born, as Margot had explained. Margot's younger sister, Lily, would start at Hogwarts when Lenora did, and the two girls found comfort in knowing that someone else understood how it felt to leave their siblings behind.
