THE SUN
Darkness surrounded me—inside and out. My body ached, my head throbbed, and a cold dread settled in my chest.
They had me now, but who "they" were? Marco's slaves.
I'd come to the Contessa villa to find Luna, to take her away, but she wasn't there. The halls were eerily silent. Too silent. And when I let my guard down for a single moment, a sharp blow to the back of my head sent me into the abyss.
The black bag was ripped off my head just as I began to revive. The dim light burned my eyes, but my captor's voice was sharper than any blade.
"Where is he?" A man's voice thundered, raw and guttural. "TALK, or I'll pluck your fucking eyeballs out! WHERE IS MARCELLO CONTESSA?"
I blinked, forcing myself to focus. The chair I was tied to creaked as I shifted, testing the bonds. "Never," I growled. My voice was hoarse, but the fire in my chest roared louder.
Uncle Marcello trusted me. Luna trusted me. I would die before I betray them.
"You little shit." The man's fist collided with my stomach, knocking the air out of my lungs and the chair onto its back. Pain shot through me as I spat blood onto the floor. My vision blurred, but I gritted my teeth, grounding myself in one thought: Luna. I have to find her. I have to protect her.
But then they laughed. All of them. A low, mocking sound that made my skin crawl.
"Tough kid for sixteen," one sneered, circling me like a predator. "But it doesn't matter how tough you are. You'll talk. Everyone talks."
Another kick to my side made me gasp. I groaned, but my glare didn't wobble. "Kill me if you want," I snarled. "But you'll get nothing from me."
The ringleader chuckled, signaling to his men. "Oh, I think you'll talk now." something was definitely fishy over here.
The door creaked open, and my heart stopped.
They dragged her in.
Luna.
