Everything was a normal day until three scientists were experimenting with a new pesticide in gas form. Then there was a leak in the facility, and the pesticide spread to all the plants in the world. There were no short-term effects, but there were definitely long-term ones. In a matter of weeks, all plants developed a taste for flesh and began eating humans. First, all the plants on farms began consuming the farmers' livestock. When the farmers went into their fields to investigate, they were eaten. All the people in nature-filled areas were next. After a while, a new species of plants formed that could move very quickly. They could outrun humans. Eventually, the plants made their way into the cities and began terrorizing hundreds of millions of people, killing most. However, some survived, including two people named Erik and James. This is their story.
"James, stop slacking off; we need to get water," Erik ordered.
"Okay, okay, I'll get up," James said. "I just didn't get very good sleep last night."
"Yeah, it's fine; I didn't either," Erik agreed. "It's hard to sleep in the hot desert sun."
"Agreed." James nodded in agreement. They walked off into their home in the desert to grab a few items, including five one-gallon jugs, some granola bars from the nearby town in the abandoned gas station, and two machetes they had grabbed while escaping their homes.
They walked down the path they had forged over the years while gathering essentials, such as water and food from the greenhouse they had built on the outskirts of the forest. When they reached the forest, they prepared themselves for an attack by the runners, the plants that could move.
"Well, that's weird," Erik said. "There are no plants on our path. Usually, we're getting swarmed out here."
"Yeah, that is weird," James agreed. "We should still keep our guard up." Erik nodded. They held their machetes out, ready for some sort of ambush, but it never happened. They reached the river and filled all their jugs with water. But as they headed back, the plants jumped out at them from the side of the path and knocked them to the ground. They nearly died, but someone jumped out of the woods and saved them by cutting the aggressive plants off of Erik and James. They tried to thank this mysterious person, but they ran off into the forest. Erik caught a brief glimpse of them but couldn't make out anything before they vanished into the branches. They walked back in silence, not wanting to disturb anything.
