Outside, the cool night air did little to calm her nerves. “What the hell are you doing, Rafe?”
“You’ve been avoiding me,” he said, his voice laced with frustration.
“Maybe because you’re impossible to deal with,” she shot back.
He stepped closer, his expression softening. “I know I’ve been an ass. But you bring something out in me, Isabella. I don’t know how to handle it.”
Her heart softened despite herself. “You don’t get to treat me like garbage and then act like you care, Rafe.”
“I do care,” he said, his voice cracking. “You’re the only person who’s ever made me feel like I’m more than… this.” He gestured to himself, his vulnerability catching her off guard.
For a moment, she considered walking away. But something about the raw honesty in his eyes made her stay.
