"Are y'all okay?"

Sam asks the girls as he stands to his feet.

Zyrah answers first, her voice steady despite the violent quaking.

"Yeah, I'm good."

"Yeah,"

Makayla answering right after.

Sam and Zyrah switch on their phone flashlights.

"Maddie? Madison?"

Sam calls out.

Zyrah guides her beam toward the kitchen table. There, huddled on her knees, is Madison, clutching the leg of the kitchen table, as if she's bracing for another tremor.

"Is it over?"

She squinted against the harsh light beaming on her face.

"Girl, if you don't get yo peak-a-boo lookin' ass from under that damn table."

Makayla teases, her tone a mix of humor and urgency. Madison crawls out.

"Bitch, we 'bout to die, and you worried about cracking a penny-worth ass joke?"

"I'm so serious right now."

"Y'all shut up."

Zyrah cuts them off. M & M turns to Zyrah, who is staring at Sam, whose gaze is on the glass of juice sitting perfectly on the living room table.

How? What the hell is going on?

"Sam, what's wrong?"

Zyrah asks. Just then, the neighbor's dog breaks the silence barking in a frenzied fit, getting Sam's attention.

Without saying a word, he walks toward the front door, the girls following behind. Sam swings open the front door to reveal an unsettling darkness. The darkness only being broken by lit candles and flashlights of neighbors gathered outside in front of their homes and in the middle of the road.

"Your entire neighborhood is without power."

Makayla says almost muttering to herself.

"No, it's not.

Sam reassuring, his voice has a strange certainty in it. The girls bring their attention to Sam as he descends the porch steps. His gaze fixed on a single-lit streetlight flickering in the distance.

As he approaches, it flickers more violently, and Sam stops right beneath it, squinting up at it
