Prologue

Confronted with the cold of a Berlin winter morning, Lisa Seidel, née Plenske, pulled her winter coat tighter around her body as she strolled through Berlin Airport, dragging her heavy suitcase behind her—much like the heavy baggage that could be described as her past. Her gaze was focused solely on the path ahead of her to avoid collisions, which was necessary given her clumsy nature. The loud noise of hundreds of voices and the clattering of suitcases kept her from sinking into one of her daydreams.

With each step toward the exit, it felt as though she was also taking another step back into the past. She had experienced so much here in Berlin, not all of it good. It seemed as though she had found her happiness here, even though she wasn't so sure about that now as she had been a few years ago. Eight years had passed since she married David Seidel and left Rokko at the altar, without a second thought about what consequences that might have or how Rokko would feel. She had fought for far too long for her dream of being the woman by David's side. That was exactly what it had been—a dream, unfortunately not the kind of dream she had hoped for. Not the kind of dream where you wake up wishing you could have stayed asleep a bit longer. Instead, it was one of those dreams where you wake up drenched in sweat, unable to believe how fortunate you are that it wasn't real. Unfortunately, in her case, this dream was real.

When Lisa finally arrived at her destination, the airport exit, and had the taxi driver help her with her luggage into the trunk, she knew—there was no escaping now. She had to face the truth and live with the consequences her decisions had brought her. As Lisa gave the taxi driver the address of her parents in Göberitz, she allowed her dream world to catch up with her. As she gazed out the car window and watched the surroundings pass by, she dreamed of a life that might have been, had she only acted differently on that fateful day.
