A few weeks had passed since that evening in the kitchen. You and Chuck had grown closer during that time, finding comfort in each other's company as the days blurred together in the Glade. You'd spent more time talking and laughing, and despite the chaos that often surrounded you, things felt a bit lighter when he was around. It was no surprise when they gave the poor kid the job of a slopper. You couldn't help but feel for him, but he was the youngest after all and someone has to do it.
But Newt... Well, you and Newt hadn't exchanged many words after that night. There were still the occasional smiles, fleeting moments of connection, and a bit of small talk when necessary. Just as it had always been. Despite that, it was clear to you both that there was something unspoken between you, something that neither of you quite knew how to handle. The bond was still there, but neither of you had dared to explore it any further.
Today was the day the Box was coming up. It always brought a strange mix of anticipation and dread, the Gladers preparing for whatever new face would arrive. Everyone had gathered, waiting for the moment, knowing that the arrival of a new Greenie meant more than just one more person to join the ranks—it meant change, and possibly, something else entirely. You stood in the crowd, trying to shake the tension building in your chest, but all you could focus on was the steady hum of conversation and the familiar faces around you.
Chuck!" Someone called out from the crowd, breaking your train of thought.
You turned to see one of the older Gladers, a builder, grinning at Chuck. "So how does it feel? You won't be the new Greenie anymore."
Chuck chuckled, giving a small 'yeah'.
The Box slowly ascended, the sound of its mechanical rise filling the air as everyone stood in anticipation. As it came to a stop and the doors slid open, the first thing you saw was a boy, looking completely disoriented. His hand was over his face as he squinted into the sunlight. He had brown hair, and was around the same age as you—maybe a little older.
Gally stepped forward, his usual snarky attitude apparent. "Well, well, look what we got here. Day one, Greenie. Rise and shine!" he called out as he made his way down to meet the newcomer. There was a slight mocking tone to his voice, but he had that look that said he was used to this.
The boy blinked, trying to make sense of what was happening, but before anyone could say anything, he turned and took off running toward the walls.
"Hey! Where are you going?!" Gally shouted, but it was too late. The new kid had already started sprinting, fear clearly taking over as he desperately tried to escape.
"Is he serious?" Minho laughed, shaking his head.
"We got a Runner!" One of the Glader's called out amongst the crowd.
The boy continued to run, before losing his balance and falling flat on his face. The glade erupted into laughter, some boys shaking their heads in amusement.
You exchanged a look with Chuck, both of you trying not to laugh too loudly as the boy finally got to his feet, looking even more confused than before. It was clear that the Glade had claimed yet another soul, and the cycle would start again.
Later that day, after the chaos of the Box arrival settled down, the new Greenie was locked up in the Pit, still trying to process everything. Alby had insisted on keeping him there for now until he calmed down. The Gladers were going about their usual business.
Chuck was given the task of showing the new Greenie around the Glade. He was handed the responsibility by Alby himself.
"You're up, Chuck," Alby said, his tone steady but kind. "Take the kid on the tour. Show him around the place. Help him get used to it."
"I'll see you later," you said to Chuck, leaving him to do the job as you headed to the medhut.
Later that day, after finishing your tasks, you had taken a quick shower. The heat of the sun had worked its magic, and your hair was now nearly dry. It had dried soft and smooth, the strands falling naturally in place.
As you made your way through the Glade, you spotted the new Greenie again. You saw him near the center, looking a bit lost, though Chuck was still sticking close by, chatting away with him and helping him adjust.
The bonfire would be tonight, the monthly tradition like it always was at the arrival of a new greenie.
