I was at the bus stop when I first smelled her.
The prominent smell of cinnamon tickled my nose. Small traces of vanilla were mixed with the smell of sugar. Maple syrup smell coated this whole aroma. I inhaled deeply and took in her own essence. It was the most beautiful scent I've ever smelled.
She was listening to music. It was an Alicia Keys song. I heard her recognizable voice. I missed hearing her sing.
I haven't listened to music on headphones since I went blind. She was singing something about it being a new day. I liked the beat of the drums in this song. I locked the song into my memory so I could look it up later.
She was tapping her fingers on the bench to the rhythm and humming lightly. I wonder if she's waiting for the bus to the University too? Or if she even noticed me sitting on the bench next to her?
Delilah rose and barked twice. That meant the bus was here. I stood up and pulled my bus pass out of my pocket. I heard the bus slow down and stop. I could hear this mystery girl's feet as she got on to the bus. So she was going to the University too. I thought as Delilah lead me onto the bus I scanned my bus card and slid it back into my pocket.
"No dogs allowed on the bus buddy." the bus driver said as he grabbed my arm not allowing me to walk.
"She's my guide dog. I'm blind." I informed him.
"Oh" he said letting my arm go.
Delilah lead me to an empty seat and I sat. The person next to me shifted uncomfortably as everyone usually does. I could feel their discomfort. They acted like they were okay with me but I could tell that they weren't. I could sense their nervousness.
"Stanford University" said the automated voice on the bus. I stood up and Delilah lead me to the exit. I smelled the mystery girl getting off after me.
I should ask her for directions. I thought. This was my only excuse to talk to her and I didn't want to give up my only chance.
Delilah suddenly pulled and I lost my grip on her harness. I panicked and ran in the direction that I thought she ran in.
"Delilah!" I screamed "Here girl!" I stopped to listen for her. I concentrated on slowing down my breathing so I could hear as clearly as possible.
All I could hear were foot steps and people talking.
"What the fuck? Give me my sandwich dog!" I heard a deep voice scream. I ran towards the angry screaming man in hopes that he was talking about my dog.
"Which way did she go?" I asked when I heard his cursing was within a safe distance.
"This way!" he said and ran off. I'll just assume he pointed. I followed the sound of his heavy footsteps. I soon lost him and couldn't hear him anywhere but I kept running praying that Delilah was okay.
I ran until I heard the sound of water in front of me. There's a lake. I stopped to prevent myself from running into the water.
"No no NO!" I heard the voice from earlier scream to my right. I walked towards him hoping that Delilah was close. I could hear her lips smacking on something.
"Delilah come" I demanded and she listened and I felt her fur brush against my leg.
"What the fuck man!" the man spat as he screamed at me. His voice reeked of pastrami "This is your dog? I thought you were tryin' to help a brother out."
"Yes she's my dog let me explain"
"No" he cut me off "Your dog ate my sandwich man!" he screamed "You're not even supposed to have animals on campus dipwad" he said as he pushed my shoulders angrily.
