I met Lance at my cousin’s birthday party. He was my cousin’s friend’s friend. We first became friends then lovers. I always thought that he was the one, my destiny. But I wasn’t sure of it. He always told me what to do, what to wear, everything! I’m so sick of it. Although he was like that, I really love him and I can’t break up with him. He was my life, my everything! Is this right to not break up with him although he was like that? Was love I really felt for him? If I don’t love him, why can’t I break up with him? Was it because I love him more that anyone else even more than myself?
“No! No! No!” Lance said.
“Why?? Don’t you like this dress?” I asked him. We were going to his friends’ party and we were in the mall looking for my dress.
“It’s very conservative,” he said.
“This dress looks really good on me,” I told him. “And we were only going to a party.”
“You look like you are going to the church. Find something else, or do you want me to look for you?” he said.
“Okay then. You look for the dress that I should wear. You are always the one who is right, right?” I said really upset.
He looked at me and when I saw his eyes, my anger vanished. “I’m sorry,” I said. “Can you pick the perfect dress for me?”
He smiled at me and looked around the shop. I followed him and then –
“I think this is perfect for you,” he said holding a cute blue tube cocktail dress with flowers pattern on the bottom and white lace on the middle. A no conservative dress!
“Uhm, are you sure? It looks like that my - ,” I said holding the bottom of the dress examining it. I was about to say that my bosom can be seen in this dress but I didn’t tell him that.
“I’m really sure. Try it,” he said giving me the dress.
I went to the dressing room and try it on. I looked at the mirror and saw my reflection. “This is not me” I sighed. “But if Lance wants me to be like this, I should be like this.” I opened the door and I saw Lance looking at me, his eyes looking from bottom to top.
“You look gorgeous,” he smiled.
“Thank you,” I said. “Are you the one who will pay for this?”
He stared at me, his eyebrow raised. I didn’t wait for his answer; I get inside the dressing room and changed.
I’m always the one who was paying for the things we bought and the food we ate, everything. I understand him because his salary isn’t good enough for his family. His parent doesn’t work anymore. That was why he was the one buying all of the things they needed. He was a great guy. But I hate it when he doesn’t like the clothes I wore. He always told me that I look old in my clothes. He doesn’t like conservative clothes. He liked revealing clothes. I don’t know why. Hope he learns to love me for who I am.
