Part 14

(Letty feels like she's been sitting there for hours before she hears a knock. The doctor opens the door and comes in with a machine and papers.)

Dr. Gale: Well I would like to be the first to tell you congratulations.

Letty: Thank you.

Dr. Gale: Now how about we get started hmm. So I'm going to need your help to lie back for me. I going to check you first to make sure everything is good. Then I will begin the ultrasound to see just how far along you are.

Letty: Sounds like a lot.

Dr. Gale: It's always nerve-wracking for first-time moms. Now since you are over 35 we will consider this an (AMA).

Letty: What is that?

Dr. Gale: Advanced Maternal Age aka Geriatric pregnancy, so it's high risk.

Letty: (gets scared) So if I want my baby to be healthy, I would have to take it easy.

Dr. Gale: It depends on the mother and you look to be in amazing shape. The only thing I would recommend is to eat more than you usually would.

Letty: What if I can't keep anything down? That's been a struggle for me the past few weeks.

Dr. Gale: I will prescribe you some medication for nausea. Now let's get this done so we can see how far you are.

(Letty lies back and places her feet in the stirrups and makes a face as Dr. Gale checks her. She's very uncomfortable and makes a face at the slight pain. Once that was over her eyes damn near bludged out seeing the vaginl wand.)

Letty: That's supposed to go up my lady part?

Dr. Gale: Yes, but I need you to relax ok?

Letty: Easier said than done but ok.

(The doctor places a condom on the wand and slowly inserts it inside of Letty's vagina. Letty gasps a little feeling the discomfort before biting her lip.)

Dr. Gale: Ok mama let's see what we have here.

Letty: (looks at the monitor) What's all that?

Dr. Gale: This here is the placenta and the cloudy stuff is the fluid. As you look closely you can see your baby is snuggled right there.

Letty: Is it ok?

Dr. Gale: Everything looks great mama and from the look of it you're about 6 weeks along. The baby measures right on time so your due date will be August 30th.

Letty: (inhale) Oh my god!

(Hearing that Letty clamping a hand over her mouth, eyes closed, and tears falling down her face.)

Dr. Fake: What's the matter?

Letty: I'm sorry but that's a day after my husband's birthday.

Dr. Gale: Oh, I know he's going to be thrilled.

Letty: (cries) He's dead. I just buried him today oh god.

Dr. Gale: Oh I'm so sorry dear.

Letty: He would have been so happy. We have been trying to get pregnant for a long time and now I can't share this special moment with him.

Dr. Gale: I know he's looking down smiling and watching over you two.

Letty: (exhale) I need to get out of here.

Dr. Gale: Ok, we are done for the day. If you would like I can get you some pictures.

Letty: (nods) Ok, I'd love that.

(The doctor gets done and leaves to go get the ultrasound pictures and Letty's next appointment. Letty leaves there with an even bigger ache in her heart as she drives towards the beach. She parks gets out and walks until she can no longer hold it together. She falls into the sand and balls her eyes out wishing that Dom was there to hold her. She felt alone and scared all at the same time as she thought about the life they made inside of her. She sat there until it was almost dark before she got up and made her way back home to her son. She walks through the door and heads up to her room spotting him curled up on his father's side of the bed.)

Little B: Your back?

Letty: Yeah, I'm back.

Little B: Can you rub my head?

Letty: Sure, just let me change.

(She roughs up his hair before she finds some sweat and goes to change. Once she's done she gets on the bed and lies down facing Little B. She brings a hand up and runs her hand through his curls. He snuggles close to her and sighs like he is finally able to relax. Letty smiles as she massages his scalp and tells one of his favorite stories.)

Little B: Mami do you think Dad and Uncle Jakob are watching over us now?

Letty: Yes, and they will be very proud of you for being so brave.

Little B: I am not brave. I got Dad killed.

Letty: No Bubba, your dad loves you and he would have done anything to protect you.

Little B: (yawns) I miss him.

Letty: Me too B, me too.

(He snuggles closer to her as she runs her fingers through his hair. After a few minutes, she hears his breath even out and slows. She looks up at the ceiling and says a silent prayer for B, her, and the baby. Before long she was asleep as she dreamed of what was and it helped her stay asleep until morning.)

(By morning Letty didn't feel any better and it seemed the morning sickness had gotten worse. She was the first one up and she needed some fresh air after yesterday. So she made some tea and went out back to sit under the canopy and looked out. She looks down at the ultrasound picture and smiles as she sees her and Dom's baby.)

Mia: You're up early.

Letty: (hides picture) I couldn't sleep.

Mia: Mind if I join you?

Letty: No, I could use some sister time.

(Mia comes around and sits down next to her.)

Mia: It's so beautiful this time of morning.

Letty: Yeah.

Mia: Yesterday was beautiful too.

Letty: I hope he's proud.

Mia: Trust me he is. He's ok knowing his family is safe.

Letty: But are we Mia? Dante is still out there hunting waiting for one of us to slip up.

Mia: He will be dead before he takes any more of my family.

Letty: We have to find him first.

(Letty sips her tea.)

Mia: What are you drinking?

Letty: Tea.

Mia: No way! I would have to pull your teeth to drink tea.

Letty: (sigh) Well I don't have much of a choice.

Mia: What do you mean? Why are you giving up coffee?

Letty: (looks at her) Just for 8 months.

Mia: (confused) What? Why eight..oh my god, NO!

Letty: (teary-eyed) Yeah!

Mia: (gets emotional) Oh Let, ohhhhhhhh.

Letty: I know.

Mia: Come here.

(Mia pulls her to her and hugs her tight as they both cry tears of joy and sadness. Letty pulls back laughing as Mia wipes the tears from her face. Mia rests her forehead against Letty as they take in this special moment between sisters.)
