Chapter 119: Wu Ting’s Peril

Zhai Muyang took Song Yimo’s cold hand, gently placing it on the gear shift. “Yimo, don’t stress too much. You’ve done everything you possibly can.”

It was a long while before Song Yimo finally whispered, “The distance between life and death is so small.”

But to pull someone back from the edge of death—that was another story. It reminded her of when she tried everything to save her grandmother in her previous life. Despite all her efforts, she could only watch helplessly as her grandmother’s body grew weaker, until finally, she closed her eyes forever, reluctantly.

Back then, she had braced herself for that moment, so her sadness felt expected.

But Zuo Chun had always been so full of life.

Just two days ago, they’d walked home together after exams, laughing and full of plans. Now she was battered, clinging to a final breath, teetering before the gates of death.

The thought alone made Song Yimo’s heart tremble.

Zhai Muyang wasn’t sure how to comfort her, so he simply turned up the heat and kept his hand over hers, lending her warmth from his own body.

There weren’t many cars on the road in those days, and most drivers instinctively gave way when they heard an ambulance. By the time they reached the hospital, Zuo Chun had already gone into surgery.

Seeing them, Auntie Zuo’s tense expression softened with relief.

“Yimo, you’re here.”

“Auntie, is Deputy Director Liao performing the surgery?”

She nodded repeatedly. “Yes, I saw the name on his badge—it said Deputy Director Liao Han from the Central Hospital.”

“Good. You rest here. I’ll go handle the paperwork.”

“Oh, thank you, thank you so much,” Auntie Zuo said, her gratitude spilling over. “If it weren’t for you, I don’t know if Zuo Chun would have made it…”

Song Yimo smiled gently. “Even without me, Auntie, you would have done everything you could to save her. You’re a wonderful mother.”

Auntie Zuo’s eyes reddened as she squeezed Yimo’s hand, unable to speak.

Seeing this, Zhai Muyang knew Yimo was thinking of her mother. He put a steadying arm around her shoulders. “I can take care of it—stay here with Auntie.”

Song Yimo shook her head. “Auntie, don’t worry. I’ll be right back.”

The surgery wing was on the fourth floor, but they took the stairs rather than waiting for the elevator.

Song Yimo explained, “Dage, you’re probably low on cash too, right? Zuo Chun’s medical costs won’t be small. We’ll need a lot more.”

Zhai Muyang looked at her, half-amused. “You just don’t want to spend my money, do you?”

"She's my classmate, and I chose to help her. There's no reason to use your money."

"So there are times when someone wants to spend money and can’t."

Song Yimo glanced up at him, dimples showing with her smile. She was relieved that her brother didn’t question where her money had come from.

Yet, part of her almost wished he had. Though a little embarrassed, she wouldn’t have hidden it from him.

The sum she withdrew was substantial, so they ushered her into a VIP room. As they waited, Zhai Muyang’s phone rang. He glanced at the caller ID, then silently handed it to Song Yimo.
