The preparations for our graduation were in full swing, and as the head of the dancers, I was responsible for teaching some moves to my classmates. We had a big hall in the school where most of our activities took place. As the social prefect, I had access to the keys and used the hall whenever I wanted. My friends were always by my side, and the hall became our little haven.
Inside the hall, there was a large TV and a CD player, which we often used for rehearsals. One faithful day, after practice, we decided to have some fun. We sent the juniors out and put on a Korean movie to watch. It started with just me and my friends, but before long, the entire class joined in. The only person left in the classroom was Judith, a quiet and devout Deeper Life Christian.
Judith was sitting alone when one of our strictest teachers, Mr. Titus, came into the classroom. He disliked our class because most of us weren’t intimidated by him. Seeing Judith alone, he asked her where the rest of the class was. Without hesitation, she told him we were in the hall.
We were so engrossed in the movie that we didn’t notice him walk in.
“Stop there! No movement!” he shouted.
We froze in place. His attempt to look authoritative made him appear almost comical. He stormed out and came back with other teachers.
“See what these students are doing during school hours!” he exclaimed.
They marched us to the principal’s office, where the other teachers insisted on calling our parents. However, our principal, a kind and understanding woman, refused. Instead, we were given five strokes of the cane each.
I was furious. “This is so unfair! We weren’t doing anything wrong; we were just having some fun!” I said angrily, still rubbing my hand from the sting of the cane.
Laura tried to calm me down. “Mimi, don’t say that. Mr. Titus was just doing his job. He’s strict, yes, but it’s for our own good.”
I rolled my eyes. “He just hates our class,” I muttered under my breath.
The next day, we resumed practice under the watchful eyes of the teachers. Our graduation was fast approaching, and everyone was giving their best. Then came the day of the final rehearsal, which was to be observed by the owner of the school.
Unfortunately, I wasn’t in school that day because I was sick. When I returned, I learned that the owner had canceled our dance performance because the songs we were using were deemed “worldly.” She declared that only gospel songs would be allowed during the graduation.
I was shocked and furious. All my effort and planning had gone to waste. I couldn’t believe it. The news weighed heavily on me, but I decided to stay calm and wait for the graduation day to see how it all turned out.
