Josh's POV
It was all just a blur. Trying to explain everything is much too difficult, but I still remember. That was the climax of my story; my life. Without these intricate details my life would of been completely opposite and I would not of grown, my country would not have grown. Now before you get perplexed let me tell you my story of the past year.
America was strict as well as the rules. Starting at the age of six everyone must follow the set of rules, or be punished by death. That's how it was and everyone accepted it's existence, no questions whatsoever. We learned it all at kindergarten when they handed out laminated sheets listed one to fifty on a standard piece of paper. That day still haunts me when I think of my little six year old self watching as the Poor guards with loaded guns broke down the door and handed the protected pieces of paper. The rules read,
Rules for Poor
1)DO NOT CROSS THE BOARDER.
2)Don't harbor a fugitive board crosser.
3)Do not speak to a Rich unless commanded to.
4)DO NOT MARRY ANOTHER CASTE.
5)Poor are limited to three children.
6)You shall not hunt.
7)You shall not get divorced.
8)You shall not kill or your whole family will be hung.
9)Listen to whatever a Rich says.
10)You must NOT MARRY a Rich.
11)You may not date a Rich.
12)You can't touch the lamp posts that serve as the boarder.
13)You must serve for the country giving 60 percent of your workings.
14)You may only marry after the age of 28.
15)You shall not steal.
16)You may not have an affair.
17)You must participate in the army if you are a male at ages 17-21.
18)Women shall not work.
19)You may not marry family, including fifth cousins or barely related member.
20)You shall not be out past 9:00 pm.
21)You shall not leave your house until at least 7:00 am.
22)You shall attend public school until the age of 14, you may drop out after that.
23)You shall help the elderly.
24)You will not eat any of your produce if you are a farmer until after giving the authorities your share.
25)You must not eat any Rich food.
26)You may not pick your mate.
27)You may only have one godchild.
28)Males must wear formal wear when Rich or authorities are nearby for presentations.
29)NO LOANS
30)YOU MAY NOT DATE ANYONE WHO IS AT A DIFFERENT RANK.
31)You must work at age 16 if you're a man.
32)NO DIARIES/JOURNALS.
33)Only women may learn to write.
34)No letter to the Rich.
35)You shall not travel to another country.
36) You must work as a slave for a Rich for one year unless a male has worked for the army.
37)You may only sleep for 6 hours at the most.
38)You shall not cry.
39)You shall not discuss any war if one if going on.
40)You may not escape.
41)You shall not visit any friends over night, only family members.
42)You will not talk back to the educator.
43)You may not attend college.
44)you shall not talk to an older Poor unless spoken to.
45)You shall not misbehave in school more than three times.
46)NO MUSIC
47)No Expressions of self allowed.
48)You must give your extra money to the Rich.
49)Rich family members must NOT visit.
50)You are Rich's personal slaves as well as authorities you may not harm or be in close contact with anyone of them.
And by the end of the year I had broken almost all the bolded rules.
