After a long, hot shower that had washed away the tension of the day, Sophia and Manon emerged from the bathroom, their hair still damp and steam clinging to the air. They wrapped themselves in towels, laughing and teasing each other as they made their way to the small living room. The sunlight streamed through the window, illuminating the dust motes dancing in the air.

"Did you see that thing on the road?" Sophia asked, her voice a mix of excitement and disbelief. "It was huge! I've never seen anything like it."

Manon nodded, her expression turning serious. "Yeah, I can't shake the feeling that it was some sort of elemental or demon. Monsters are definitely back in Savannah."

Sophia raised an eyebrow, her curiosity piqued. "You think so? What makes you say that?"

"I don't know," Manon replied, biting her lip. "It just had that... energy. Like it was alive in a way that was wrong. And with everything else going on, I wouldn't be surprised if it was some kind of omen."

"Creepy," Sophia said, shivering slightly. "But it does fit the vibe around here lately. I mean, we've had strange things happening since we got back."

Manon nodded, but then Sophia shifted the conversation. "What's up with your dad, though? I saw the way you reacted when he mentioned coming home."

A shadow passed over Manon's face, and she sighed. "I don't know. He's just... different lately. It's like he's carrying this weight, and I don't really understand it. Can we change the subject?"

"Sure," Sophia said softly, sensing the shift in Manon's mood. "What about that 'breaking and entering' incident? I mean, you didn't break anything, right?"

Manon let out a laugh, the tension easing slightly. "Please. I've never even broken a water glass. I'm the least rebellious person you'll ever meet."

"True," Sophia teased, squeezing Manon's hand. "But I kind of like that about you. It makes me feel like I can be myself too."

"Same here," Manon agreed, intertwining her fingers with Sophia's. "It feels like we can do what we want, not what we're expected to do."

Sophia smiled, her heart fluttering at the connection they were building. "It's kind of amazing, isn't it? Even beyond that weird dream, it feels like we're connected on a different level."

"Yeah, it really does," Manon said, her eyes sparkling with sincerity.

They made their way to the assembly hall, where a makeshift theater was set up for a production of Romeo and Juliet. The stage was beautifully decorated, and the atmosphere buzzed with anticipation.

Sophia couldn't help herself and quoted a line from the play, "But, soft! What light through yonder window breaks?" She paused for dramatic effect.

"Is that a Shakespeare reference I hear?" Manon clapped her hands, a teasing grin on her face. "I'm impressed!"

Sophia laughed, leaning against the railing. "I've read the book and been in the play multiple times. It's practically part of my DNA."

Manon rolled her eyes playfully. "So, what you're saying is you're an expert on doomed teenage romance?"

"Pretty much," Sophia replied, her tone light. "But it's not like our situation is exactly the same, right?"

As they climbed onto the set, they settled on a small bed that had been placed for the actors. It was cozy, and Sophia felt a sense of belonging as they sat side by side.
