Nash gives Cameron a secretive smile. "What do you mean?"
Cameron drives off and heads to the halfway house it's only a few minutes drive and he doesn't say anything to Nash until they're in his room without anyone to see him and think he's talking to himself or crazy.
He sits on his bed and looks at Nash who is casually leaning against the desk.
"Who and what are you?" Cameron asks bluntly, he doesn't want to play any games. He wants answers.
"I'm Nash and I'm your angel." Nash replies just as bluntly, Cameron's harsh tone doesn't faze him at all.
"You're my what?" Cameron asks incredulously, it's really unbelievable.
"Your angel, Cameron." Nash repeats himself as if what he just said isn't completely crazy. Cameron tilts his head as he studies Nash. He still has that special glow about him and his eyes sparkle like blue diamonds.
"Where are your wings?" He asks and his brain is trying to grasp at the idea that he has a guardian angel.
Nash looks behind him and then smiles softly at Cameron as his fluffy, pure white almost translucent wings appear behind him. Cameron wants to touch them and maybe feel their softness on his cheek. Nash smiles because he knows exactly what Cameron is feeling at the moment.
"You're my angel." Cameron states and he runs his hand through his hair as he tries to understand the fact that Nash is his angel. That he kept an eye on his mother and pushed her to seek help, it's because of him that Gina was able to heal and work through her problems.
"Mm hmm." Nash says casually like he didn't just drop a bomb on Cameron.
"Since when?" Cameron asks and he gets a sudden idea that he can't help but blurt out. "Why didn't you stop me that night ten years ago?"
"Mmm... I can't directly intervene in the decisions that you make. You have free will Cameron and to be honest your mind was so made up that even if I told you not to do it, you would have done it anyway." Nash explains softly and Cameron nods because what Nash is saying makes some sense. It was his decision and it's one that he doesn't regret.
"I'm a murderer, how do I get an angel?" Cameron asks and his eyes fall to the ground. Suddenly he doesn't feel worthy of being in Nash's presence.
Nash walks up to him and stands him up, Cameron is a little shorter than him so he looks up at him.
"I'm not saying that what you did was right but your intent was good. You did it for your mother and it doesn't justify what you did but it does show that in your heart there was a reason for what you did," Nash explains softly, his wings flap lazily behind him and Cameron bites his lips as he reaches out to touch them. His fingers flow right through them and Cameron wonders if this is how it would feel if you could touch clouds. They're soft and airy, Cameron would love to feel them on his cheek.
Nash knows Cameron's desire and he maintains eye contact as his wings stretch out and he runs them over Cameron's cheek softly. Cameron's eyes flutter shut and this is the most relaxed he's ever been. He feels safe, protected and loved and all of those emotions come directly from having Nash's wings touching him.
"Thank you," he says thickly and he doesn't want to cry again so he swallows back the tears. Nash continues to stroke his cheek tenderly with his wings and his hands rest on Cameron's waist. Cameron lets out a content sigh and without even thinking he wraps his arms around Nash and rest his head on Nash's shoulder. Nash's arms find their way around him and then his wings curl around Cameron's body.
He feels happiness for the first time in over a decade.
They stand in their embrace for a long time, Cameron doesn't even know how much time has passed, all he knows is he never wants to step out of his angel's arms.
There's a hard knock on the door that startles them out of their trance, Cameron sighs and steps away. He opens the door to reveal the owner of the halfway house.
"Cameron Dallas? I'm Taylor Caniff I wasn't hear to meet you earlier but you seem to have settled in nicely. Our only requirement is that you put in at least 5 applications a week, you're on your own as far as food goes but everything else is paid for with our grants. There's one cable TV in the living room, if you have a laptop I can get you access to our wifi network. Laundry is in the basement and showers are used by everyone. Questions?" Taylor says, he has this whole introduction memorized and he says it to everyone who enters his doors.
Cameron shakes his head slowly as he tries to process everything Taylor just said.
"Good, see you around. Stay out of trouble, fights are strictly prohibited and will be reported to your parole office immediately," Taylor warns before he turns and leaves Cameron standing at the door. Cameron turns and smiles when he sees Nash sitting on the desk, his wings are gone and it causes Cameron to pout a bit.
Cameron sits down on the bed and looks at Nash. "How did you become my angel? Were you assigned or something?"
"No, I wasn't assigned to you... I was just floating through the world, I kind of lost my way for a while and then I found you. It was a few months before you killed your father. You could hear him slapping and punching your mother and you had your eyes squeezed shut. You wanted to intervene so badly but when you did, he would take it out on your mother. I could feel your pain, you wanted to help her so much, you wanted to save her from that miserable existence. I've never encountered anyone who felt so much emotion over another being... it was that moment that my travels were over and I became your angel even though you didn't know it," Nash explains quietly, there's a lot he's left out, mostly to do with why he was floating listlessly across the Earth but Nash isn't ready to talk about that with Cameron.
Over the 10 years he kept a close eye on Cameron and the woman he loved deeply enough to commit a serious crime in order for her life to be better. He made sure that nothing bad came Cameron's way in prison and he also helped Gina heal from the horrific act that she witnessed. Nash has grown attached to Cameron, in a way that an angel shouldn't get attached but he's barely an angel anyway. He mostly answers to himself.
An angel is never supposed to reveal themselves to their human but Nash felt inclined to when Cameron was released from prison. He figures as long as he's breaking rules he should just break all of them and be done with it.
"I remember that night," Cameron says flatly as he stares at the wall. He can remember that night clearly in his mind, he was desperate to save his mother and it wasn't until months later that he finally snapped and rid the world of the vile man.
Cameron feels vulnerable, he needs to be comforted and he's so thirsty for affection. Being deprived of any meaningful human contact as weighed Cameron down.
He lies on his back and silently hopes that Nash will join him in the bed.
Nash hesitates, he knows if he takes this step it will lead them on a path that cannot be changed. He sees two futures ahead for them. Nash decides to comfort Cameron, it doesn't matter what the consequences are, he will make Cameron happy for as long as he can.
He slides into the bed with Cameron and Cameron's heart flutters when Nash pulls him into his arms and his wings appear, he wraps them around Cameron. Cameron once again feels safe and content.
His eyes feel heavy and he drifts off to sleep in the arms of his angel.
