While Adam was fighting the lizards, in another part of the forest, Evan was also struggling.
Finding a vine bear had been tricky, he had had to lurk around caves and hope for his prey to be in it. Only, he had often found normal bears or bears of other attributes instead of the one he was looking for. He had encountered a few wolves and two foxes. Sometimes he had to fight, others the animals had let him go.
Just as the giant was about to despair, he had found a vine bear quenching his thirst in a nearby stream.
The vine bears were easy to recognize. Those monsters used vines to slow down their opponents and other tricks with their vine magic, which was a derivative magic from earth magic. As such, they had green vines all over their bodies, covering their black fur.
The bear Evan had found was huge with thick vines around his torso and limbs. It had a rough demeanor with scars all over his body and wide paws. This bear had a past, and not a kind one. It would make the perfect prey, as it would prove Evan didn't hunt a small cub that had just finished his weaning.
However, hunting it was another matter, and it explained the current predicament that Evan found himself in.
The giant was running from left to right, scarcely avoiding the swinging paws of the bear. Vines sprung out of the ground, tying Evan's legs and forcing him to slow down slightly to rip his legs free from their shackles. His heart was hammering loudly in his chest as the giant tried to think of a good tactic.
At first, he had thought of jumping on the bear's back and strangling it from behind, ending his hunt quickly as the giant knew he didn't have the best stamina out of bed. However, his plans had been promptly disturbed when the bear had sensed his approach before he even had time to jump on his back. The monster had gotten up on his back legs just as Evan had jumped, sending him rolling in the dirt a few feet away. He had gotten on his feet quickly though, as the bear had wasted no time in taking its revenge.
He was now in a dilemma, trying to avoid the attacks while trying to come up with a new strategy. Adam was best at those kinds of things, thinking quickly under pressure. Evan was more of a chill guy, taking his time to think and understand. It was why Adam was the leader of the party and normally led the way when fighting.
Even now, Evan had the bad habit of waiting for Adam to give him order, only to remember that he was alone, and that it was his fight. A fight he needed to win if he wanted to see his children and lover again.
The former slave clenched his jaw as his resolution sharpened, and his muscles contracted as he prepared his next move.
As the bear tried to send him flying again with his paw, the giant slid his way under the monster's arm, taking advantage of the lack of stability the bear had when standing on his two hind legs and thus couldn't push him away without ending on his back.
Evan thought fast, remembering what he learnt with his father's subordinate.
Against taller opponents, judo was often the solution. While not traditionally passed down in this part of the world, Evan had learned it early on from where he was from. He was rusty with the techniques, but years of practice had shaped his muscles. His brain may not remember the moves, but his body did.
Making up his mind, Evan took hold of the bear's right elbow by clutching his fur with his left hand while putting his right foot forward. He then took the animal's left shoulder in his grip, bringing both arms slightly up as much as he could and thus making the already unstable bear stumble a little. He then brought the bear's right paw over his head with his left hand, rotating his wrist.
Quickly doing a one hundred eighty with excellent footwork, Evan found himself with his back against the bear's chest, bringing his feet slightly closer so that they were inside of the bear's, while still parallel. With his right elbow under the bear's left armpit and across his chest, Evan straightened his back, squatted down and threw the bear over his shoulder with a loud shout.
The Seoi-nage was perfect.
With a sound loud enough to wake up the dead, the bear found himself on his back. Taking advantage of the position, Evan quickly jumped beside the bear and brought down his whole body in a single jump in the bear's stomach, pointing his elbow where he thought was the liver.
The monster roared with pain and anger, but it wasn't enough to defeat it. Evan hurried a few feet away as the bear started to get up. Taking advantage of the still disoriented bear, Evan quickly stepped closer and ran punches after punches in the bear's face. As the monster was still on all four paws, just in the right position for an uppercut, Evan threw his weight in a half-squat before bringing his arm up while twisting his body, making a direct impact against the middle of the bear's jaw.
The monster once again roared, angered by the fly that was more of a mosquito than he had thought. The bites hurt slightly, and he was annoying.
Evan tsked under his breath, mad that his strength wasn't enough with the bear. The animal's skin was too hard, and the vines around his body were keeping him from making any real damages. His body was already starting to slow down, his breath coming out in puffs of hot air and his sweat dripping down his overused muscles.
The throw earlier hadn't been perfect, and he could feel that he had probably used too much of his muscles and not enough of the motrice force, thus straining a few key muscles. At least, he had been able to injure the beast's organs. The bear had blood dripping down his chin since the blow in his stomach, and Evan could tell that he suffered from an internal hemorrhage. However, it wouldn't be enough to take down the bear before the monster was able to crush Evan's head with his paws.
It was a matter of time, and the giant wasn't sure which one of them both would be the last standing.
