( chapter thirty, closer than you think )
❝ watching me, wanting me, I can feel you pull me down ❞april 15th, 1998
KATHRYN HADN'T SLEPT a minute that night. Her eyes darted around her room, fingers clenching the knife as she waited, half-expecting the killer to pop out and finish her off once and for all. If it wasn't going to be the copycat, it would be Billy, and that thought scared her more than any other.
Billy Loomis - a boy she once looked at as if he created the stars. He was someone she'd once considered a friend, even as she kept her distance to avoid her growing attraction. Yet, while she dreamed of him, he was plotting the deaths of her and her friends.
Now he was back, ready to finish what he'd started.
Kathryn knew, soon enough, their paths would cross again, whether she wanted it or not. But she had to stay focused. There was a killer to catch, and she wouldn't let herself get distracted like she had two years ago.
"Whatcha doing?"
She snapped her notebook shut, eyes darting up to see Mickey grinning at her, his gaze flashing with mischief.
"Uh, nothing," she stuttered, shoving her notebook into her bag. "What are you doing?"
Mickey chuckled, watching as their friends made their way to their lunch table. "I was just wondering if I could interview you for my documentary," he teased, a smirk playing on his lips. "What do you think?"
Kathryn scoffed, rolling her eyes. "Are you serious?"
"I thought you'd say that." With a sigh, Mickey turned to Derek, who'd taken a spot across from him. "Hey, Derek, do you think Sidney would let me interview her for my documentary?"
A sullen look flashed across Derek's face at the mention of Sidney. Before he could respond, Hallie jumped in.
"Oh, sure. She turned down Primetime, 20/20, and Dateline, but for you?" she replied in exasperation, earning an eye roll from Mickey and a chuckle from Kathryn. "Oh, yeah."
With a small smile, Hallie slid her lunch tray toward Kathryn. "You need to eat something, Kat. You've been so caught up in that notebook - don't think we haven't noticed."
"Thanks, Hal, but I don't think I can stomach anything right now."
It was true. With the recent murders and the weight of one of the biggest secrets she'd ever kept, eating was the last thing on her mind. She had bigger problems - like catching whoever was out to kill her and her friends.
"So, about this killer," Mickey began, his voice lowering. "Have you checked out Randy lately?"
Kathryn's eyes narrowed in disbelief. "What?" she blurted out, louder than intended. The thought of Mickey even considering Randy to be the killer set her off. She knew Randy - better than most. He wasn't capable of something like this.
"Look, I know he was a victim last time, but he's a little... off," Mickey defended himself, noticing Kathryn's growing irritation.
"If you're putting Randy on your suspect list, you might as well add me, too."
Mickey scoffed, nudging her shoulder playfully. "You? Oh, come on, you couldn't hurt a fly."
"Yeah, and neither would Randy," she shot back.
"Guys, keep it down," Derek muttered, nodding at an approaching figure. "What's up, Sid?"
Sidney smiled as she took a seat beside Kathryn. "Hey," she said softly, setting down her tray.
