I was never one for lying- not that an outsider would believe that, but i wasn't. I only ever did it out of survival or to protect the ones i love.

I think that's why it hurt so much when Ink lied to me- to someone he's supposed to love.

Now i sit in my flat unsure what to do next.

That is until i get a phone call.

I stare at the screen for a minute as a familiar name flashes. I answer, reluctantly in an utterly confused state.

"Mum?" I call into the void, unsure why she is calling me.

"Hi sweetie" She says

I instantly swallow, knowing what's happening. The cheerful tone and the old pet names she used to use, it's a telling sign that she's getting worse.

"Hi ma, what is it that you need?" I ask as i rest the phone between my cheek and my shoulder as i walk over to the fridge to grab a coke.

"I haven't seen you in so long, when are you going to come visit me?" She asks

"Ugh.. soon Mum yeah" I say as i struggle to open the can before it pops open "Hey, how did you get this number? I mean it's not been in use for months why are you still calling it?" I ask

"What do you mean dear? I called you last Monday and you answered, why wouldn't you have answered?" She asks

At that i set the drink down onto the table and start to pace

"Is there anyone else with you that i can speak to Ma?" I ask

"One minute dear" She says before i hear shuffling

"Hello?" A man calls down the phone

"Hi, It's Lucas" I say

Silence greats me down the phone before i sigh

"It's Lawrence" I try and suddenly i hear him again

"Oh yes, you must be one of her daughters, how can i help you?" He asks

"Well considering my Mother just called me on a phone I've not used in months to then say she talked to me last week- I'd say I'm a bit confused... i thought she was getting better" I say

"Well, Mrs Lawrences condition is improving however she seems to still be having difficulty remembering short term things. She doesn't remember that you've been.... Away the past three months" He explains

I place a hand over my forehead "So she doesn't even remember Katies funeral that she attended... does she even remember that i killed Dad?" I ask

The man stutters on the end of the phone- i doubt medical workers have to answer that question everyday.

"Ugh, she probably won't remember anything that's happened in the past 4-5 months" He says

"Nevermind, just... don't let her call me on this number again, it might confuse her if it stops working" I explain.

The man says goodbye and i click the phone off.

I sit on my bed as i take a drink of my coke, utterly confused. Why now? Why did she call me now?

After i got sent to prison, Katie had to live with another one of my sisters, she was 17 so couldn't live alone. My Mother was classed as 'unfit to take care of her' as she went downhill after the trauma of the night. She wasn't doing good before that, the hits she had received had already knocked her brain about, but this took her over the edge.

I blamed myself- of cause I did- but after time I realised that I couldn't change it.

After that weird start to my day i decide to get out of the flat.  Knew if i stayed sat in the room i would only spiral- it's one of the reasons i didn't have a job... one of the reasons.
