Lily's POV:
I spent the morning making a bunch of friends. I swear, everyone here was awesome. I've met at least 20 teenagers total, and this was only a small part of the island. For a moment, I got seriously sad, because I realized how many teenagers like me have tried to commit suicide or died of unnatural causes.
But then it diminished as I looked around and realized how happy they were here.
I sat at a table eating lunch with a girl named Bethany. She had long, flowing black hair and big blue eyes. We just happened to order the exact same meal so we ended up talking to each other.
"So, how long have you been here?" I asked. She didn't look uncomfortable at all, while I was still getting used to all the openness.
"Oh, I'm not sure. I died in a car accident and ended up coming here. I don't know how long ago that was." She said. I nodded. She smiled at me warmly.
"Uncomfortable?" She asked kindly. I nodded and she smiled.
"You'll get used to it soon enough. Honestly it's paradise here." She said. I nodded.
Two guys walking past us bumped into each other and I winced, bracing myself for a fight. Fights always broke out in our high school. But these two guys just laughed, and went their opposite ways.
"How come everyone is so nice here?" I asked Bethany.
"We're not exactly....nice as you'd think, but we get along because we've all been through a lot. We don't judge here because on some deeper level, we all share a connection of insufferable teenage pain. Or at least we did." She said. Our food came and I grabbed a french fry, feeling really hungry. When was the last time I ate? A cold chill ran through me as I realized that I was still technically in a coma right now. I put down my fry, not feeling so hungry anymore.
"You okay?" Bethany asked me. I shook my head.
"No. I just realized that part of me is still down on earth." I said. She gave me a sympathetic look.
"Coma?" She asked. I nodded.
"Comas are pretty rare here. Most of us are dead. But, some of us are minds that have happened to have found there way here. So if you don't mind my asking, how'd you get into a coma?" She asked.
I showed her my arms, and my most recent one on my wrist. I winced just looking at it. So did she.
"Suicide attempt?" She asked. I nodded.
"I was bullied terribly every day. My dad died of cancer not even a year ago, my mom wishes I was a different person all together, and my boyfriend...he broke up with me because I was destroying his reputation." I said. She frowned.
"That has to suck." She said. I nodded.
"By escaping all that though, I lost 3 of the most important people in my life. My friends and my brother." I said. She nodded, placing a hand on my knee.
I felt better talking with Bethany. She seemed like a really sweet girl. In a way, she reminded me of Lydia. I felt a pang in my heart and twisted the friendship bracelet from her, thinking about her and hoping she wasn't too torn up.
***
I spent the rest of the day hanging out with a bunch of different teens, all with different stories. Some reminding me of my own. I've made a few friends. And I wished they were alive so that I could see them when I got out of my coma. But they weren't, so I was going to enjoy being around with them while I was there.
