Sprinkles and I were heading toward her PG, humming along to the songs playing in the car after our amazing date. I couldn’t help but feel a sense of triumph that my plans had unfolded perfectly, succeeding in bringing that unmistakable joy to her face.
The memories we made during the rides, her squeals of delight on the roller coaster, her laughter when she caught me cheating at the arcade games, and her childlike excitement over the cotton candy — were moments I couldn’t trade for anything in the world.
As we neared her PG, rain started to fall, oddly at this hour. Both of us were surprised."Achanak se baarish? Dev, what shall we do now?" she asked, glancing at me with concern.
("Suddenly it's raining?")
"Don’t worry; we’re almost there. You’ll reach safely," I reassured her. But by the time we reached her PG, the rain intensified, making it difficult to even see through the windshield as I struggled to drive.
"What happened? Why aren’t you getting down?" I asked when I noticed she was still sitting in the car even after we reached the gates.
She looked at me with concern and asked, "Dev, what about you? Your house is so far away. How will you go in this weather?"
"Don’t worry, I’ll manage somehow," I replied, though I wasn’t entirely sure how, considering I wasn’t used to driving in such weather. Still, I didn’t want her to worry any more than she already was.
"Pagal ho kya aap? Don’t you watch the news at all? How will you travel safely with so much risk?" she burst out angrily, making me smile at her concern.
("Are you crazy?")
"For a moment, I thought it was my mom scolding me and not my Sprinkles," I teased, laughing as I leaned over to peck her cheek.
But her serious glare wiped the smile off my face instantly."Okay, fine. So what should I do now? The rain doesn’t seem like it’ll stop anytime soon, and waiting here isn’t a great idea for either of us," I said, trying to reason with her.
She paused, thinking for a moment before exclaiming, "Idea! Just like the other day, you can wait in my room until the rain stops."
Her suggestion instantly brought back memories of that particular day when I had sneaked into her room, unable to resist checking on her after she missed classes for days. But this time, it felt like a more difficult feat to repeat.
"Na, Aadrika," I replied, shaking my head. "That day, it started raining after I was already inside your room. This time, if I try sneaking in the same way and my leg slips, you might lose me forever."
"Don’t worry. Nothing of that sort will happen.I’ll be there to help you," she countered with determination. "But please don’t drive in this weather, Dev. It’s too risky, and I won’t be at peace until I know you’re safe." Her voice softened, and she added, "Please, Devyaan, please."
