the door was opened and the wind appeared, the candles blew and than disappeared, the curtains flew and than he appeared, saying, "don't be afraid"

NIGHT HAD FALLEN, and Kathryn had spent the entire day trying to cleanse herself of her past. She'd even gotten rid of Billy's jacket. It had been much harder than she wanted to admit, but it had to be done.

Woodsboro Kathryn was dead and gone. Windsor Kathryn was here to stay.

Tonight, she and Sidney would be escorted to their safe house. The timing couldn't have been worse - Kathryn had spent most of the afternoon trying to contact Dewey to clear her date with Mickey, but he hadn't answered. Sidney hadn't had any luck reaching him either, and the silence was starting to gnaw at Kathryn's nerves.

At least Jaylyn had been cleared to accompany them, along with Hallie. The two would ride with Samuel and Cole, while Kathryn and Sidney would travel with Sidney's bodyguards. Kathryn was relieved, at least, to know that her best friend would be in safe hands.

Standing beside the sleek car parked behind them, Kathryn and Jaylyn's quiet conversation trailed off when Sidney and Hallie approached, the bodyguards following close behind.

Kathryn's eyes narrowed as she glanced at Sidney's guards before shifting her attention to her own. There they were - Samuel and Cole - lounging in the car, snacking on popcorn as if they were watching a movie instead of guarding two women being targeted by a killer. Kathryn almost wished the killer would show up just to give them a wake-up call on how useless they are.

Jaylyn sighed and stubbed out her sixth cigarette of the day, turning to Kathryn with a tight smile. "So... see you when we get there."

"Yeah," Kathryn nodded, shoving her hands into the back pockets of her jeans. An awkward pause lingered before she added, "You wanna pick out my outfit for tonight?"

That seemed to break the tension.

Jaylyn's face lit up, her dull eyes suddenly sparkling. "Uh, hell yes! You don't even have to ask, girl. I've got you covered. You're gonna look so good, Mickey won't even know where to put his film geeky hands."

Kathryn groaned, laughing despite herself, but Jaylyn wasn't done. She spun around, grabbing Hallie by the arm and pulling her into the conversation.

"Hallie! Mickey and Kat are finally going out, so it's our job to make her hot."

Kathryn flushed with embarrassment as Hallie whipped her head around, her surprised grin wide and gleeful. "Seriously? Well, it's about damn time!"

"That's what I said!" Jaylyn laughed before turning back to Kathryn. Without warning, she pulled her into a tight hug. "Hey, I love you, babe. No matter what's been happening, okay? Please don't forget that."

A lump rose in Kathryn's throat, tears pricking at the corners of her eyes. She tried to blink them away - this wasn't the time to ruin her eyeliner. A relieved smile curled her lips as she whispered, "I love you too, J. Thank you for... everything. For sticking with me."

"Of course," Jaylyn replied, pulling her in for one last hug before linking arms with Hallie.

With a final look and a warm smile, the two climbed into the back seat of the car. Kathryn stood there, watching as the vehicle sped off into the night, taking her friends further away.

Sidney turned to Kathryn, her voice low but steady. "Jaylyn's going to be fine. Samual and Cole might not look like much, but Chief Hartley handpicked them. They know what they're doing."
