"I was up thinking last night. Instead of doing something to get back at them physically, why not prove to them that they need me?"
"What do you mean?"
"Hudson and my dad have it easy. All they do is oversee what I do, which is practically everything. If they want to act like I'm some lazy piece of shit, I'll show them just how much they need me."
"And how do you plan on doing that?" she asks, pursing her lips to keep a smile from forming.
"Easy. Let's just say I have control of payroll. I may or may not be setting it up for everyone to receive half of their expected pay. It'll be a complete accident since I'm so incompetent according to my family."
"Landon, you're not incompetent." her face softens with a hint of concern.
I can tell she's trying her hardest not to comfort or touch me but damn it, I wish she would.
"For the longest time, I was convinced I was. You're starting to help me see that they're the problem, not me."
Her eyes meet mine for a moment before she nervously continues.
"But why would you punish your employees? They don't deserve a pay cut because of your dad and brother."
"I'm not. As soon as we get to work, I will set it up and change their paychecks. Little do they know, I will have it set up for them to receive the other half tomorrow."
"Excuse me if I sound stupid, but what will this prove?"
"Simply put, they need me. After this whole mess is dealt with, I'll throw in a little bonus for the inconvenience. I can tell you right now, there's nobody else out there that would put up with their shit. They wouldn't be able to keep someone for any more than a day in my position."
"Not that this isn't a good idea, but they're going to hear about it right away and come running to you so you can fix it."
"It'll be kind of hard to get ahold of me when by the time they get their checks after work, you and I will already be checked into a five-star hotel. That's if you won't be too busy for me."
"Of course not- yeah."
"No distractions. The top floor with a balcony and a beautiful view of the city. Phones and location turned off. Just you and I."
Her cheeks redden through her freshly done makeup.
"Would you like that?" I ask attempting to make eye contact.
"It sounds wonderful. Are you sure you wouldn't like some time alone?"
"I'm sure."

"You did tell your dad I was coming back today, right?"
I can feel my pulse quickening as we make our way up the elevator to the office. It somehow feels like my first day all over again.
"No. why?"
"Landon! Why not?" I ask, clutching my briefcase tightly to my chest.
"I'm kidding, I did." he grins.
"You ass! You scared me."
"I can't be sweet to you all the time. Being an ass is part of my personality," he winks as the elevator stops on our floor.
