"It's been a decade, I'm sure he's moved on." y/n whispers as she sees the tree that they used to frequently climb on when they were kids, the same tree where they would secretly meet up and go hang out, the same tree that saw all of their joys and sadness, the same tree that's been carved with both of their initials, promising a future where they would be by each other's side.
"It's been a decade, and yet I still hope for you to come back... " Y/n mumbles and then chuckles as they start walking again. At the same time, a familiar blonde with a dragon tattoo on the side of his head passes by them. Y/n looks back and sees them looking back, too.
"Y/n." he whispers their name like it is fragile, "Ryuguji..." Y/n mutters, looking at him with the same look they had years ago, y/n looks at him and then notices that he's been holding something, letters, their unsent letters, their eyes widen as they look at him in surprise. Ryuguji seems to see their surprise look as he looks at them.
"I just saw these accidentally when I helped your brother move his stuff out of your old house... Is this really how you felt back then? Why didn't you tell me?" he asks, his voice somewhat desperate. They seemed to be choked up, they couldn't reply, how could they? They've watched him grow, have been with him through their ups and downs, watched him with his first heartbreak, watched him get married to their step-sister Emma, and watched him grow old with her. How could they tell him how they've felt when his heart has been fated to another?
Their breath slightly hitches as they replied, "Why? It's because I knew, I knew that even if I tell you, your heart yearns for her, your eyes seek hers, and where's my place in that Ryuguji?" she says, a small tear escaping her eye as she quickly wipes it off, "Those letters were my grief, my yearning, my soul, my joy, you. Yet, I've left them unsent because I knew, I knew that you were never destined to be with me."
Ryuguji looks at y/n. A mix of emotions courses through him as he looks at them: confusion, anger, disappointment, but ultimately, relief. "Y/n, remember this tree?" he asks. Y/n looks at the old Wisteria tree. They nod, "Of course I do. We used to climb this tree back then." Ryuguji snickers and looks at them. "It's also the symbol of our unrequited love." He looks at her, and Y/n looks back at him, surprised.
"I... liked you too, I just never had the guts to tell you since you seemed too perfect for me to touch, for me to hold, for me to look at, fuck, you were perfect, regardless of what you'd look... This, this tree knows every angry confession attempt I muttered, the branches, the leaves, the roots, the bark, everything, this tree knew how much I loved you, y/n." "Then why didn't you say anything if you yearn for me that much?!" y/n yells, Ryuguji looks at them for a while and lets out a heavy breath, "Like you, I was scared too, of what you might say, what you might feel and how it might affect us, I was scared to lose you with just simple words, so I chose to let go and move on."
Y/n looks at him as Ryuguji walks closer to them, the letters dropped down below their feet as he holds her shoulders gently, "Y/n, you mean much to me if you knew... I still do, but not in a way as before." Y/n looks away, "I know..." y/n mumbles as they look at their letters on the ground. "Ryuguji... If I confessed much sooner... Was it me you're supposed to marry then?" y/n whispers as they look up at them, Ryuguji looks at them and sighs and smiles, "I guess I would've married you... But things are different now and we can't change it, can't we?" he replies as y/n chuckles and slowly pulls away from Ryuguji's hold and nodded and they looked at the Wisteria tree in front of them.
"Goodbye..." y/n says and turns away as he walks off, leaving Ryuguji, once they are out of sight, Ryuguji sighs heavily and starts picking the letters and walks over to the tree, he walks towards the back and there he sees a canned box and takes it out as he dusted the dirt off the top and then opens it, inside it were old bracelets, old stickers, and some old photographs they took together as kids as he smiles looking at them as he then places the letters there and closes the box once more and places it back where he got it. He looked up at the tree and caressed the bark.
"May this tree be a symbol of our unforetold story, Y/n..." he mumbles as walks off in a different direction.
Years passed by and both of them grew, eventually dying of old age, but the tree remained. Years later, a child climbing the tree stumbles upon the canned box as they take it off and open it, the child quickly climbs down holding the box gently, and runs back home, leaving their friends confused but continuing to play. The child reaches home runs to their room and places the box on the floor they quickly dust the dirt off as they take the lid off, there he stumbles the old photographs, the letters, the old worn-out bracelets, the old keychains, the old stickers, and an old worn out velvet box, the child slowly opens it and inside was an old plastic ring.
"Grandpa's old ring..." the child mumbles as they look at the photographs of you and Ryuguji when you two were still young, the child smiles remembering the times when Ryuguji used to tell them stories of a childhood friend he had that he had once had a crush on. Back then, Emma and Ryuguji had a tough marriage, they weren't as compatible as they thought they were so they were separated but still kept in touch for the sake of their children, Emma remarried and Ryuguji remained a bachelor till death. But before his death, he told one of his grandchildren to find the old box that he cherishes the most in the old Wisteria tree as this was his last word before dying.
The child quickly got their bag placed the box there and ran back down, they got onto their bike and quickly drove to the cemetery and went to Ryuguji's burial site, once the child was there, they placed the old rusty box next to the flowers as the child smiled.
"I finally found it, Grandpa... I hope you're happy." The child mumbled as they prayed for a moment before leaving once more.
