____________________________________________Jake is driving in his car with Carrington in the passenger seat. He just picked up Carrington from the bar that was downtown.
The couple recently have been distant lately, and this is the first time they have been in the same car together in a few weeks.
Carrington sat in the passenger seat, the tension between them palpable. He couldn't help but notice the silence, the lack of their usual banter and laughter.
He glanced over at Jake, taking in his focused expression as he drove. He cleared his throat, breaking the silence."Thanks for picking me up," he said, trying to sound casual. "I didn't think you would."
"Why wouldn't i? You still live with me," Jake bickered as he flicked on his turn signal while waiting at the light. "I can smell alcohol on your breath. You're drunk."
Carrington huffed, slightly annoyed by Jake's tone. He rolled his eyes and leaned back in his seat.
"I had a few drinks, that's all," he said defensively. "I'm not that drunk."
He looked out the window, avoiding Jake's gaze. He knew he was being stubborn, but he didn't want to admit that he was feeling guilty for going out and drinking when they had been distant lately."Whatever," Jake muttered as he turned once the light turned green. His voice sounded heartbreaking.
Carrington winced at the hurt in Jake's voice. He could feel the tension growing between them, and it was suffocating.
He sighed and ran a hand through his hair, feeling a pang of guilt in his chest."Look Jake, I know things have been... strained between us lately," he said, finally breaking the silence again. "But I'm still your boyfriend, right? You don't have to pick me up if you don't want to."
"Well i did!" Jake snapped back, as he stopped at another red light. "Okay,?!" As he rests his hands on the wheel.
Carrington flinched at Jake's sharp tone, surprised by his sudden outburst. He clenched his jaw, feeling a mix of anger and frustration building up inside him.
"You didn't have to Jake," he retorted, his voice rising slightly. "I can take care of myself, you know."He crossed his arms over his chest, looking out the window again with a frown on his face.
Jake tears up, "But i wanted too.." he mumbled as he sniffled quietly and continued to drive.
Carrington's expression softened at the sound of Jake's mumbled words and his quiet sniffles. He looked over at him, noticing the tears in his eyes and the way his grip on the wheel tightened.
His heart clenched in his chest, guilt washing over him once again. He hated seeing Jake like this, especially knowing that he was the cause of it.
"Hey..." he said softly, reaching out to place a hand on Jake's thigh. "I'm sorry, okay? I didn't mean to snap at you."
"Don't touch me." Jake snorted and swatted Carrington's hand back as he parked at their driveway.
Carrington pulled his hand back, feeling a pang of hurt at Jake's words and action. He stared at him in disbelief, not used to being rejected like that.
"What the hell, Jake?" he said, his voice low and frustrated. "I was just trying to comfort you."
Jake didn't reply, he just exited the car and slammed the door closed. Then walked up to the house and unlocked the door.
