In the royal chambers of Crete, Queen Pasiphae summoned Icarus, the lover of Apollo and the best friend of her daughter, Princess Ariadne.
"Icarus," she began, her voice filled with concern, "I need your help. King Minos is desperate to find a husband for Ariadne. But the suitors he has found are not suitable."
Icarus with a heavy heart, and his face serious, asked, "What can I do, my Queen?"
Pasiphae revealed the truth about the suitors. Her inhumanly flawless face twisted with disgust, anger and worry about her favorite child.
"These suitors that my husband has scrounged up. They are all too old, have been married before, and their wives died mysteriously. I have investigated and found that two of them beat their wives to death, and the third let his wife die because he was too cheap to hire a physician."
Icarus' eyes hardened. One of his hands dropping to his sword. With great effort he removed his hand from the hilt and balled it into a tight fist as he exhaled a breath of rage. Not for the first time, he repressed the urge to walk up to the king and stab the tyrant in his face. Unfortunately, Minos held Zeus' favor. Minos was also a demigod of one of the Great Three. Icarus was good enough to give his friend Nicodemos a somewhat decent challenge but the priest had won every single one of their bouts and spars.
"They cannot be allowed near Ariadne. I would gladly kill them all, but they are the king's guests, and I would be violating Xenia."
Violating Xenia was something just not done by anyone with an ounce of sense. It would bring the wrath of the gods on the perpetrator and eveything they held dear.
Pasiphae nodded, understanding his predicament. As a very minor immortal goddess, and the daughter of a disgraced titan at that, she was quite vulnerable herself to the whims of the Olympians.
"There are other ways, Icarus. You often act as the king's cupbearer due to your good looks. I have a powder that, when added to their wine cups, will make them repulsed by the idea of marrying Ariadne."
Icarus took the ring containing the powder and put it on the fourth finger of his right hand. It fit perfectly, as expected of something given to him by the precise, exacting queen. The ring was gold, adorned with a large red ruby. It had a clever hinge that opened to show a small, hidden compartment full of a purple reddish powder. Icarus nodded, the queen had even accounted for the color. This would be undetectable in wine.
"But Minos will grow suspicious if this happens with another set of suitors."
