I sat there waiting for my boyfriend. We planned a last minute coffee date and I was sitting in my car waiting for him to pull up. I checked my phone, not knowing the time. 5:50 PM flashed back at me. He was 20 minutes late, but he is usual is on time for everything. This is one of the first dates he was late, he was late to another one because he was lost. I sat there for about another 25 minutes, I started to get worried. I called him and he picked up by the third ring.
"Hello." he said.
"Where are you? You were supposed to meet me at The Bean at 5:30." I said.
"Babe, I'm sorry something came up and couldn't make it." he said.
"Why didn't you call me?" I asked. I hear something that makes my stomach churn.
"Jakey who's calling you on our date?!" I heard the high voice screech.
"No one, Vic. Listen I can explain-" he said. I cut him off, I'm yelling and certainly not happy.
"No, that's it Jake. You've been acting weird around me and ignoring me. We're over Jake, have fun with this Vic chick. I'm done, we should see other people obviously, bye!" I yell through the phone. I end the call and rest my head on my hands on the wheel. I start sobbing, in a moment I lost my boyfriend and I couldn't believe it, I'm so hurt my chest feels like its going to explode. I stay like that for about 5 minutes and put on my sunglasses and grab my credit card and phone and head into The Bean. The owners are good friends with my family and they were like my second family to go to. I didn't take off my sunglasses, I didn't want people to see that I had been crying.
"Hey Drew, I'll have my regular." I said, my voice slightly cracks.
"Sure Em, you okay?" he asked.
"Not really, me and Jake broke up. He was cheating on me with another girl." I say and take off my glasses, revealing my pink puffy eyes.
"I'm sorry to hear that, hey it's his loss. Trust me there are plenty of fish in a huge sea," he says. "Coffee is always a cheerer uper! Plus stay as long as you need to." he says with a smile. I laugh, making me feel slightly better.
"Thanks Drew, hey how's Miranda?" I ask. Miranda is his older sister and I haven't seen her in forever. Drew is my brothers best friend and he is 6 years younger than me. Me and Miranda used to be so close when they were little because we were a year apart and when she graduated she moved to L.A. when she left for college.
"Good, she graduated from art school. Sadly, she's staying out there, we miss her but she comes home whenever she can." he said.
"Well that's good to hear she's doing good. Thanks Drew!" I said turning to sit in the bay window they have a small but cozy booth. I settle into the booth and look out the window. It felt good to be here surrounded by people getting my mind busy. I noticed a guy that was extremely good looking. He had short brown hair that was pointed outwards towards the front, a tighter v-neck on showing he had a nice body, and revealing muscular arms, he had a smile that could light up the room, and he had the funniest laugh. I could see him looking at me once in a while. I played with my ring that I got in eighth grade, as I was nervous he was going to talk to me. I've noticed him around my area and I thought he was always good looking since the eighth grade at a community picnic. I was on my phone when I see someone sit across from my feet. I look up to see it was the guy that was looking at me. Shock went through my body.
"Hi, I'm Clay. I've seen you around and wanted to meet you, I heard from Drew you went through a pretty tough break-up and I wanted to help." he said, his voice husky and kinda sexy to me. I feel butterflies in my stomach and my heart pounding out of my chest. I never felt this way with any guy, not even Jake after almost 3 years we were together.
"Nice to meet you Clay," I say as we shake hands. "Yeah my boyfriend, well ex-boyfriend, cheated on me. We were almost together for 3 years next month but he ended up cheating on me when we planned a date to be here." I say, swinging my legs to the floor. I was secretly hoping he was single. Why was I thinking this, I just got over a relationship. I guess there was something that Jake and I didn't have, and who knows how long he was cheating on me. I don't know but he was the past and I didn't want anything to do with him.
He scooted closer the more I talked. He was now next to me. He smelled of some sort of after shave and he smelled so good. "Sorry to hear that, I just got out of one last night and thought I would help someone I've seen around and in need of some advice." he said. We ended up talking until Drew's parents told us they were closing. Clay walked me to my light blue Voltswagon.
"Oh before I forget," I say before opening up my door, "Here's my number, call me." I say with a wink. I see his cheeks flush in the lamp post lights. I giggle at the sight of his cheeks turning a bright pink color. I kiss his cheek and get in my car, I wave and pull out. He waves back. In my side mirrors I can see him holding his cheek, I laugh at his reaction to my kiss, I was shocked that I was liking someone so quickly, I felt a lot happier with him around. I felt like I had to pull to get Jake's attention after the first date, but I didn't have to try anymore. I pull into my garage, and get out of my car and slip off my shoes as soon as I get into my apartment. I undress into my pajamas and go into the bathroom to get ready for bed. I come out to find an unread messages from an unknown number. I open out the message app.
"Hey Emma, it's Clay. I had a great time getting to know each other. It sounds stupid, but I feel good about us." Read the first one. I reply back.
"Hey, I feel the same way. How about I meet you at the park tomorrow around 3?"
"Sounds like a date ;)"
"Can't wait, night! xo"
"Night Em :)"
I turned my phone off and I rolled over with a smile on my face. I felt like the happiest girl in the world and couldn't wait to see him again. To hear his laugh, to hear him say my name, to just be with him.
