"Really disappointing" is how Sri Lanka captain Dhananjaya de Silva has characterized his team's Test schedule this year. He thinks that playing as few Test matches as Sri Lanka has planned this year is a "huge disadvantage" for the team.
There are just two more home Test matches for Sri Lanka against Bangladesh in 2025 after this two-match Australia series. There are now only 12 Tests planned for their upcoming World Test Championship cycle, or an average of six Tests year.
"As a good Test cricketing nation, it is incredibly unfortunate to have only four Tests," Dhananjaya stated the night before the two-Test series against Australia. "To be honest, it is a significant disadvantage, particularly in light of the fact that ours is also a positive aspect.
"I am hopeful that we can get more fixtures than we now possess. Hopefully, there will be an open window for us to talk about the possibility of playing future Test series. I am hoping Sri Lanka Cricket can put something together. All we can do, however, is manage what we can and perform well in the cricket matches we do receive."
One of the teams with an opportunity to go to the World Test Championship final was Sri Lanka. They would still be in the running for this Australia series if they had won one of the two Test matches against South Africa. However, after losing badly in South Africa, Sri Lanka's best chance is to place close behind South Africa and Australia, the finalists. They would need to win this series 2-0 even for that to occur.
Dhananjaya remarked, "We were close toreaching to the WTC final," "We have a strong team, but we lost a fewgames due to bad luck. The two Test matches we lost against Pakistan [at thebeginning of the cycle] were a significant setback. However, we must end thecycle on a high note. We will be content if we can reach No. 3.
