— DECEMBER THIRTY FIRST
7:OO A.M.

Seven was in the back, double checking numbers & stats when a sharp knock at the locked front door pulled her focus. She frowned, glancing at the time on her Rolex, the same one Jasiah had gifted her for Christmas. It was more of a token of appreciation, something he had been meaning to give her. She was quite literally his partner in crime, embedded in an organization much bigger than just slinging dope in the streets.

Seeing the time, she knew nobody had any business showing up this early—not even the girls came in this early for rehearsal & with Jasiah locked up, the unexpected knock could mean anything. Could be the police. Could be an opp. Anything.

Making her way to the entrance, she peered through the tinted glass before unlocking it, pulling the door open just enough to get a good look at the man standing outside. Black man, nicely dressed in a tailored charcoal suit, & looked of importance. Everything about him screamed "official."

He gave a polite nod, holding a black briefcase in his hand. "Morning. Aaron Carter—I'm Jasiah Brown's attorney, representing him in his current case as well as handling the legal matters concerning Rated X's shutdown."

Reaching into his suit pocket, he pulled out a sleek black cardholder, flipping it open revealing a polished business card rested neatly in its slot, embossed with silver lettering:

Aaron Carter, Esq.
Senior Criminal Defense Attorney
Carter & Vaughn Law Group
Bar No. 4728391
Licensed to practice in California
Office: (213) 999-3637
Email: acarter@cvlawgroup.com 』

Seven eyed it carefully, with a small squint in her eyes then looked him over again. "& what do you need here?"

"I need to speak with Iris," he stated. "Jasiah gave me her contact information, & we spoke briefly over the phone last night. She told me she'd be here this morning." He spoke calmly, but it was clear he wasn't here to waste his time & get asked too many questions in order to handle his business as needed.

Seven studied him for another moment before stepping aside, allowing him in. "Come on then." She gestured for him to follow, leading him past the empty main floor & toward the back offices.

She stopped in front of Iris's door, knocking twice with her knuckle before pushing it open. Behind the desk, Iris glanced up from her screen, exhaustion evident in her eyes after a restless night spent trying to make sense of X's operations. Despite her fatigue, the long hours of studying were paying off, she was starting to get the hang of it.

"Iris," Seven said, stepping back. "This is Jasiah's lawyer."

"Oh!" Iris straightened up instantly, her professionalism switching on like a reflex— as if she hadn't just been resting her head in her hand, eyes barely open. "Come in." She gestured for him to enter as she rose to her feet.
