1. New beginnings

Starting a new school midsession was not cool! But then I had used this excuse to shop so much that it left me with little choice except attending Modern International School in Delhi.

I had moved to Delhi during my summer vacation after dad and mommy fought horribly. The fight was so bad that he left mom to fend for herself. My grandpa got over to Singapore and changed our lives. Pushing away these thoughts I decided to dressup and make most of my first day at school.

I reluctantly got out of the huge, ancient, carved wooden four poster bed. It apparently belonged to some pre-independence era Britisher. Much like most of the antiques in the sprawling Sainik farms bungalow. My grandma loved to buy curated antiques and the house had many such things. My room was one example. It was a pastel yellow with the four poster bed dominating much space with a dresser and a huge balcony where there was a wooden swing. Suddenly I remembered my chic and stylish Tiffany blue room in Singapore and a pang of sadness came over me.

I saw the clock and decided to get ready. I had a mission to see what all changes could I do to the ghastly powder blue and white uniform. Yes my school had uniform unlike the one I attended earlier which was cool with casuals as long as your midriff did not show.

After my shower I decided to set my hair in Blair Waldorf style.  I quickly used an iron to straighten my waist length black hair and put on a white bow hairband. The shirt was white so I decided to wear a black sports bra to make a fashion statement. The skirt was seemingly sad but thankfully mom had not screamed the house down when I got it stitched short. I tucked the shirt in tightly and added the belt. I also wore some knee length socks to get the whole dainty look.

A smudge of MAC kohl to accentuate my almond shaped, honey brown eyes and my trustworthy Benetint to add some colour to my cheeks and lips. I looked cute especially as the uniform included ballerina shoes.

I quickly clicked a few selfies with my brand new iPhone 6 and sent them to Nicole, Ria and Manasi from my Singapore gang. They were my bffs and would always remain so.

As I headed downstairs I saw a tiffin and water bottle waiting for me on the table along with a pbj sandwich. As soon as I grabbed the sandwich my mother came. "Good morning maa!!," I pretended to act excited.

She glanced at me, "dear please don't mess up in this school. Your grandpa had to pull a lot of strings to get you admission mid year."

I have heard this a million times and I want to yell back who told you to leave Singapore? But knowing how she will cry I replied, "sure maa! I'm so excited let me go now. I don't want to be late."

And then as she turned to hug me she saw the black bra, "when will you learn Nia this is a school not a fashion show what if you get punished due to the black stunt you are trying", she asked angrily.
I picked up my tiffin and exited the house thinking of all the beautifully mean replies I could give her.

*maa is an endearment and means mother in Hindi.
