Chapter 8- Refrain
The next day, majority of the Creatures stayed home. It had been a truly eventful week, and now it was time to have a day of rest.
"He likes me!" Kevin exclaimed as he hung out at Dex's apartment. They were sitting on the couch watching TV and earlier, they had been debating whether or not they should play a video game.
Dex laughed, his eyes glued to the screen. "You still didn't tell me all the details, my friend."
Kevin glanced over at Dex. He was silently thankful that they were normal friends again. "We were locked in his office because Jordan was going to spray us with Death Spray."
Dex finally looked away from his TV to look back at him. "And?" He raised an eyebrow.
"I held onto him playfully," Kevin explained. He held a mystical look in his eyes as he remembered the previous day's events. "This freaked him out and he started to fake laugh, but really, it started sounding like sobbing, so I asked what was wrong."
Dex scoffed, "Yes, go on!"
"So he asked me why I liked him so much, and I said whatever," Kevin shrugged. Even if Dex claimed to have given up on Aleks, he didn't want to say what he told Aleks. "Then he was like 'What if I did like you?' and I said I'd be happy, right?"
Dex just nodded as he kept listening.
"I then asked if he did like me, but he said it was just a-" he made air quotations, "hypothetical."
Dex laughed loudly. "Ooh, ouch!"
This got Kevin to laugh shortly with him. "Yeah, well," Kevin went on, leaning back on the couch and relaxing. "Before we went our separate ways, I asked if we would ever speak of this subject again, and he said maybe later."
Dex had a fanboy moment, and he squealed and kept laughing. "My God, Kevin! Good for you!" He nudged him with his elbow.
Kevin kept smiling. "If he's just leading me on or something, I'll be very pissed. Right now though, I'm extremely hopeful."
Dex took a moment to stare into space. He still didn't know how to feel. Kevin kept going on and on about Aleks and Dex tuned some of it out. He was happy for Kevin, but a tiny part of him wasn't satisfied with living through Kevin. Why would he feel jealous when he used Kevin to feel better and give up on Aleks?
"You listening?" Kevin asked, snapping Dex out of his thoughts.
Dex blinked a few times before turning towards Kevin, "Oh, sorry..."
Kevin smiled at him a little. "I totally understand if you don't want to hear about me and Aleks."
Things changed inside Dex all too quickly. One moment he was fine hearing about Kevin and Aleks, but now he suddenly felt a bit pissed off about it. He glared over at Kevin, "What about you and me?"
This caught Kevin off guard. "What?"
Dex's face felt a bit hot as he softened his gaze. "You and me," He said again.
Kevin looked off to the side to avoid looking at Dex. "That was just a one night thing," He muttered. "Besides, you're the only person I can go to to talk about Aleks right now. I can't imagine talking to any of ex-girlfriends about this."
Dex scoffed and he relaxed yet again. There was a feeling burning up inside him and he didn't want to release whatever it was and ruin the moment. "We have great sexual chemistry," Dex mumbled, ignoring Kevin's comment.
This made Kevin jump. He nearly got off the couch. "What!?" Kevin exclaimed. "You can't be serious!"
"I am," Dex smirked, even though Kevin still refused to look directly at him. "I haven't had it that good for a long time." He looked off into the distance with a smug look as if to show of his masculinity.
Kevin shifted uncomfortably. "Don't say that. You're making it sound like you were never happy for me."
"I kind of am, but I'm jealous at the same time. I'm jealous of you, yet I want you. It's very confusing," Dex sighed. Finally, he turned to watch the TV again.
It went dead silent between them after that. They kept watching TV and even made small talk to decide what to do next.
When Kevin went back to his apartment, he thought about what Dex had said. Did this mean Dex liked him now too? Kevin sighed as he sat on his bed late that night. He mapped out the relationship chart in his mind.
He, Dex, and James all liked Aleks. James and Aleks used to date, but they broke up a long time ago. Kevin had a girlfriend, but they had broken up a long time ago as well. Dex seemed to have always had a thing for Aleks, and the same went for Kevin.
Having Kevin go after Aleks made James suddenly jealous, which caused him to go after Aleks as well. Dex probably never intended to go after Aleks, but ever since realizing how Kevin felt about Aleks, he joined in as well.
Kevin sighed again, louder this time. Why did it have to be so complicated? What did Aleks think about it? That was a dumb question, Kevin thought. Aleks doesn't like this much attention.
A buzzing noise made him jump out of bed and grab his phone from the bedside table. It was a text message from James.
The message read plainly: I've got a bone to pick with you.
Kevin shifted back onto his bed and sat crossed legged as he thought of what to text back.
He decided on the message: What the heck, man? What's up now?
A few minutes passed and finally, his phone buzzed again. This time, the buzz didn't stop. James was calling him.
Kevin's jaw dropped as he saw James' contact show up on the incoming call screen. He suddenly felt very scared. James was so feisty and aggressive, and he was scared to face that side of him again. He definitely thought they had made up at this point...but maybe he was imagining that part? He hesitantly slid his finger on the screen to answer. "Hello...?"
"What the fuck did you do?" Came James' angry voice. By the sound of it, James was talking in a low voice, almost as if he didn't want to be heard.
Kevin swallowed nervously. "What are you referring to?"
"Did something happen between you and Aleks?"
"Why do you ask that?" Kevin shot back. He finally met half way with James' anger. He too, was getting irritated.
"He seems different," James growled.
"Oh yeah?" Kevin scoffed.
"He kept grinning and shit," James clarified.
Kevin's eyes widened. His hand began shaking. Was he saying that Aleks was happier than usual?
"You said something to him, didn't you?" James said, his voice rising just a little.
"Maybe," Kevin shrugged, though James wouldn't know it.
Kevin could hear James' breathing before he replied again. "I don't want to think that he likes you," James muttered, almost not wanting to say it aloud. He sounded so sad at that moment, so defeated.
Kevin's jaw dropped to the floor. He grew weaker as he felt happier.
His cell phone slipped out of his hand and hit the floor.
James eventually hung up.
