CHAPTER 15
"Mirror, signal, manoeuvre," she uttered under breath for the hundredth time that day.
Sloan stared out the windscreen, pleased at her progress. She'd been concentrating so hard, her tongue had even stuck between her lips at one point. Somehow he had managed to keep his hands to himself and he daydreamed about how he would reward them both.
"Sloan. Sloan!" She panicked and he ripped himself out of a particular lovely fantasy.
"You've got this, nice and gentle. Foot on the brake and done," he said proudly. Her hands remained gripping the steering wheel sharply and he slotted the system into park. He pressed the stop engine button next and she finally started to relax.
"You need to pay more attention," Candice muttered not looking at him, and he knew he fucked up as a tear fell down her cheek. "I was worried."
Gently rubbing her fingers, he entwined them with his own as she finally released the wheel. Bringing her hands up to his lips he kissed each one.
"I'm sorry baby, I got carried away. It won't happen again. I'm so proud of you though. You've done so well, much better than when I first learnt."
A smile tugged at the corner of her mouth and brushed away the single tear from her face. He didn't loosen his hold on her hands though. Just squeezed them comfortingly. They were parked at the end of the car park ready to collect Theo from his after-school choir rehearsal.
She was still shaking slightly and tugged her onto his lap, not caring who would see. She resisted at first and then settled, head tucking into his neck. She felt exhausted and all she wanted was to fall asleep in his arms. "I'm being silly I know, but..."
"Shush, now you're being silly." He cajoled. "It's perfectly natural to be anxious about learning new things. Never mind when they are carrying my nugget inside them. Causing mischief already," he whispered gently into her ear, whilst rubbing her stomach. She chuckled and tightened her grip around him, seeking comfort. She'd been crying more and more recently. Over silly things like cracked eggs and a bird that had flown into the window. She didn't know how he put up with her.
"I'll drive us home, shall I?" He queried and she nodded against his neck. He spotted Theo running towards them and he pressed his lips against hers one last time. Settling her into his seat, he pulled away only to duck back in and fasten her seatbelt as her eyes were already closing. Closing the door gently, he waited outside the car for Theo with a finger against his lips.
"Candice has just fallen asleep. She was exhausted from the stresses of her driving lesson. Of learning a new skill." Sloan said, speaking softly.
Theo eyes lit up in understanding. "Lets let her sleep," he whispered and then made an exaggerated motion of twisting his lips together.
Sloan nodded and mimicked the gesture. He even threw away the pretend key. Theo delighted in it and quietly hopped into the car. It seemed that Candice had welcomed a new lighter relationship to his son as well. Yet another thing to thank her for.
Candice was still sleeping after the short trip home and he hesitated over what to do. He brushed hair away from her eyes, forgetting in the silence they had company. A sudden movement of Theo opening the door drew his attention and awareness. Opening the door, he paused outside of hers and held back a grin as his dilemma was solved for him.
"Can you carry her in dad?" Theo whispered quietly to him as they both stared at peaceful face through the glass.
"Sure, you get the front door okay?" He whispered back and Theo eagerly nodded.
Opening the door silently, he scooped her up into his arms. Her head rolled slightly but settled against his neck just how he planned. Not for the first time, he carried her over the threshold and signalled to Theo where he was heading. Theo nodded his understanding and closed this door gently and then started taking off his shoes. Sloan smiled as he saw him place them neatly together. It hadn't even a week ago that he was wildly flinging them off. Looks like Candice's OCD-like tendencies were rubbing off.
Treading upstairs, he reluctantly left her tucked up in bed. Kissing her forehead softly, he closed the door softly so she could rest. He felt a little guilty, he was at least partly to blame. He'd been coming into her room in the middle of the night. It was the only time they could be together.
