"Okay Lil's, are you going to be good for grandpa?" I had spent the whole morning before I had to leave spending time with Lily and playing all her favorite games with her. I told her I was leaving for a few days and she was sad but of course, she knew that I needed to.
"Of course mommy. I'm an angel."
Laughing, I gave her one last hug and kiss before turning to my dad and Uncle. I hugged them both and thanked them again before grabbing my suitcase and backpack. I headed outside and saw Beau waiting for me. He texted me this morning asking if I'd need a ride and not wanting to ask anyone else I accepted it.
"Hey sunshine." Shaking his head, Beau grabbed my suitcase from me and threw it in the trunk with his.
"You know, you don't have to call me that. Would you like me to call you Cub? Because I can, I have no problem with it."
"No, no I'm good Beau, thanks."
"Exactly." We both laughed and started our drive to the airport. We were meeting everyone else there but we were really early. "Want too stop somewhere and get some food?"
"Umm, sure."
I was never nervous when I was around any of the guys but for some reason, Beau made me feel different. I have barley even known him and yet, he gave me butterflies with just one look.
This was new to me because even with Lily's father, he never made me feel any kind of way but that was how I thought it was, until I met Beau. It was to early to feel any kind of way so I pushed the butterflies away and repeated over and over "we're just friends", "there's nothing to feel nervous about", "he's your team mate".
"We're here." Climbing out of the car, I saw we were at Denny's. I smiled when I saw this because it was my favorite place to eat breakfast. "Is this place okay? If it's not we can always go somewhere else."
"No, it's fine. It's the best place to get breakfast."
"Well in that case, ladies first." He opened the door and gestured for me to go in front of him. Smiling I thanked him and walked inside with him following close behind.
"Table for two please." Nodding her head, the hostess grabbed two menus and silverware and took us to a booth in the back. The place was pretty empty to my amazement but it was also probably a good thing; didn't want anyone realizing who we were. I ordered lemonade while he got apple juice and she left us to look at the menu.
"Aren't you going to look for what you want?" Beau asked me a few minutes later. I shook my head and smiled. "You already know what you want huh?"
"Yeah, I get the same thing every time."
"How do you not get sick of it though? I like to try new things every time. That way I never get tired of the same thing."
"Well that's a good idea but have you liked everything you've tried?" He thought about it for a minute but then shook his head. "Exactly, so why risk getting something you might not like when you already know what you like? Plus, it's not like you eat here enough to get sick of it."
"You're right." He shut his menu and laughed.
We made small talk until the waitress came to get our orders. In the end, we ordered the same thing which we thought funny; I knew he had good taste.
"So, tell me about you Kolby. I know everything about you when it comes to hockey but that's about it." He set his elbow on the table and leaned forward, placing his chin on his hand.
Slightly blushing from the attention, I wring my hands. "Well, I was born in LA on January 16th. My mom left after she had me but I couldn't care less because I never knew her. My dad, David, then met my other dad, Justin, and it was love at first sight. They both played for the LA Kings and well you already know what happened to my dad and everything."
"Yeah, Kolby, I'm really sorry about that. He was a legend, and still is to this day. He would be proud of you."
"It's okay Beau but thank you, that means a lot." Swallowing the lump in my throat, I continued. "My life kinda spiraled out of control after that and I got into a lot of bad things. I ended up having a one night stand with a guy and had Lily 9 months later. It's cliche but Lily is the reason I'm here today. She motivated me to be better and I got very lucky with being able to do what I love but also being able to provide for her."
"That's great, really. Everyone has a past and yours doesn't make me look at you any different, we all make mistakes. Lily isn't one of them though. If you don't mind me asking, where's her dad?"
"It's fine. After I had Lily he still wanted to party and do drugs. He didn't really care so me and my dad decided it would be best to move. He didn't know we were leaving but I don't think he care's very much."
"Maybe that's for the best though. Lily deserves better than that; than him. You're an amazing mom, Kolby. I know we haven't known each other for long but I know that you are the only parent she needs."
Before I could reply, our food arrived. While Beau was occupied, I quickly wiped at my eyes that were full of tears. I wasn't sad, quit the opposite actually. Him saying that to me meant a lot.
My dad and uncle had told me countless times that I was a good parent but it never helped because they're family. Beau saying it though, made me actually feel like it was true.
After that, he told me everything about him, from when and where he was born up until just right before we met. It was nice being able to just sit and talk; get to know him.
There was much more to him than hockey and he was way funnier than I thought he was. We were having a great time talking until we realized that it was 11:30 and the plane left at 12.
"Crap Beau, this is all your fault!" I yelled as we jumped into his car. He laughed as he pulled out of the parking lot. "I'm not joking, you're the designated driver. I could blame it all on you and say you picked me up late."
"Hey, that's not fair! I was trying to be nice and feed you before our flight!"
"I know, I'm just kidding. Hey, at least we won't have to sit and wait for everyone else. They have to wait for us." We both laughed evilly and then laughed even harder. "You know, I'm really grateful how accepting you guys have been of me. I know it's probably hard to have a girl on the team."
"We have a girl on our team? Since when?!" I gasped and hit him on the arm. "Ouch, dude, that did not help your case." Laughing, I shook my head and turned toward the window.
It took us 25 minutes to get to the airport and parked. We had to rush and get our stuff before running toward the private planes. When we got there we passed our suitcases to the guys working there and shoved our way up the stairs.
The plane was quit when we pushed through the door laughing. Everyone was watching us with suspicious looks on their faces.
"Where have you guys been? You're late." Sid stood up with a questioning look on his face.
Without a second thought, I pointed at Beau and shouted, "his fault!"
"Hey! That's not cool! I did you guys a favor. I made sure she ate so we all didn't have to listen to her complain about how she could eat a whole cow."
"That was one time!" At this point everyone was laughing and shaking their heads at us.
"Alright lovebirds, take a seat. We have too go." Downie shouted from the back of the plane causing another round of laughter to occur. I smiled and flipped him off. He jokingly jumped up and started walking towards me. "Wanna go dude?"
"Bring it bro!" Duper got in between us and "held" Downie back.
"Get your girl sunshine." Beau's face turned bright red and he grabbed my arm dragging us into our seats.
"Well this flights going to be fun, isn't it." Beau laughed.
Oh, he was definitely right.
