Our story starts 5 years ago when I met the love of my life; Adian. I was perched on a stool next to a window studying for exams in a local coffee shop, taking in the smell of brewing coffee. I was so emerged in my studies, that I didn't even notice the little bell dinging over the door when someone came and went. Just as I took a sip of my coffee I looked up to see the most gorgeous man I had ever seen. Little did I know, this man would be the beginning of a new chapter in my life. All I could do was sit and gawk at this god of a man. I guess you could say he felt my intense gaze on him and turned around to look me strait in the eyes. My eyes widened slightly and I briskly looked away in embracement, I knew I had been caught looking. As he grabbed his coffee and headed toward the door he chuckled to himself, but right before he got to the door he did a double take and looked over toward me.
From that moment, I knew he was mine to be. I can't tell you exactly what made me attracted to him, maybe it was his deep blue eyes or his neat yet ruffled short chocolate brown hair or the way his clothes fit him to a T. All I knew was that I was meant to love him, and he was to love me back with the same amount of passion and desire. The next day I went back to the coffee shop continuing to study for my exam, when he walked in once again. Instead of taking his coffee and leaving like the day before, he walked strait to an empty chair next to where I was seated. All he did was sit there and text away on his phone drinking from his coffee, this behavior happened for a week until he came to sit at my table. From there we just hit it off. I found out that he was a junior in college at UCLA studying to become an accountant, and I too went to UCLA as a freshman in college planning to double major.
We had so many adventures together, with him I didn't have to worry; I didn't have to think. Four years later he proposed to me, and the obvious answer was yes. I had a huge grin on my facing remembering all the times I've spent with him, as I w
oke in bed, I searched around the sheets to feel Adian's warmth. Then I remembered that he was away visiting his parents, for a week in New York. I slowly got out of bed, and headed toward the kitchen to make myself coffee. On my way to the stairs I ran into our kitten Tiger. While bending down to pick Tiger up I gave her a gentle scratch behind the ear, and she gave me a satisfied purr back. I finally arrived down stairs, before going to the kitchen I went to the living room and put Tiger down on the couch and turned the TV on, then I exited through the 10 by 10 foot square shaped arch and down the long hallway to the kitchen on the left.
After I was finished brewing my coffee, I headed back to the living room where I found Tiger fast asleep. It was 11AM meaning that Adian had left four hours ago, he wouldn't be in ,New York for another hour and a half. He wasn't scheduled to call me until he got to his parents house which would take him an hour. The first time I meet Adian parents, I was frightened beyond words. I was afraid they would judge me because of my skin tone, I was always concerned when my boyfriends took me home to meet their parents. I quickly found out that Adian's parents didn't care that I was African-American, in fact I felt like I was home, like I could call them mom and dad. As I got up to go back the the kitchen, I got an unsettling feeling in my stomach, my intuition was telling me something was going to go wrong today. I briskly brushed it off and picked up a startled Tiger in my right hand and the coffee cup in my left.
I went to the kitchen at 11:30 to put the cup in the kitchen, then headed back up stairs with Tiger so I could get dressed to meet Zoey, my best friend. I had planned this shopping trip with her last week knowing that Adain would be out of town. Plus I was missing out on some quality friend on friend time since I convinced her to move out here to California three months ago. Which let me tell you was the hardest thing since she didn't want to leave Massachusetts, where she went to college at Harvard for law school? When we met at Citadel Outlets it was already 12:30, so we started our shopping spree an hour into shopping my phone rang. I mindlessly answered the phone knowing it was Adain. I was wrong about thinking that Adain would be on the other end of the line. This was not just an ordinary phone call, it was a call that no person wants to answer, a call that leaves you breathless and on edge, it keeps you concerned, this was the call that changed my life forever.
