Chapter 13

Jayden

"Did you hear about what happened 1st period?" Cal asked as he nudged my arm playfully. I pushed him back and moved down the line for food.

Yes, I had heard all about it. The new girl got a detention on her second day of school! It was all I could hear about.

"No, why?"

"You have to hear it from me, I was there. I mean, she didn't notice me or anything."

Callum shrugged his shoulders and picked up a tray.

"Lexi came in today all in black, not looking like she cared at all, and sat down, looking straight forward. I'm not even joking. Then Miss Kelp called on her and Lexi looked half asleep. She got real mad, and fast. Then, she had a go at her about her essay because she got a C+. A C+! I can't even get that on a good day."

We moved down the line a little more.

"Then Lexi just shrugged her shoulders like she didn't care and Miss K gave her an after school detention. It was so funny. Then she made her stay after class and I had to get to English Lit so I didn't hear it all but you should've been there man."

I grabbed a tray and followed Cal. We were almost at the front of the dinner line when he nudged me and pointed to the other corner of the room.

Lexi sat there alone, on Chelsea and Hannah's table, with her head in her hands and a pained expression on her face. I wanted to go over there immediately but Cal gave a sharp tug on my arm, reminding me of getting my lunch.

After I got a small salad (yesterday's burger had taken a toll on me) I headed straight over, ignoring Callum's protests.
I could practically feel every pair of eyes in the canteen following me to one of the loser tables. I doubt it would stay that way after today. Me and Callum didn't usually sit alone at our table but we were the only ones on our lunch yesterday.

"What is he doing?" I heard Tyler whisper to Michaela, utterly confused.

I couldn't blame him; if it was him in my place, I'd be questioning his motives as well.

I stood behind Lexi for a few seconds but she didn't even notice I was there. I dumped my tray onto the table and sat down abruptly. She suddenly looked up, a little startled, a little tired.

"Do I even want to know?" I asked softly, shaking my head and smiling.

At that moment, I didn't care that she was my enemy; I pushed it aside and saw her as a friend in need of comforting. Lexi returned my smile and shook her head.

Callum dropped in front of me and gave me a confused look with raised eyebrows. To be honest, he look like a demented bulldog. Lexi looked at Cal, a bit confused by her second unexpected guest, and mumbled something under her breath about her day getting weirder and weirder.

"So..." I trailed off, "you seemed upset."

I didn't want to pry too much - it might have nothing to do with me. And why should it? But it upset her and for some reason it killed me to even think about why.

"It was nothing." Her angelic voice quietly said back, with a small shrug of her shoulders.

I didn't believe it for one second though.
