Chapter 5

The cool chill of the morning whipped at my cheeks. I stared up into the sky, hoping to the gods that I would come out of this alive. Why I was pleading to live, I had no idea why. The was just this... feeling, I guess you could call it.

I was standing on the edge of the morning shadow of the tall, charred hospital. I felt jittery, as if I was being watched. I shrugged it off. I was still in shock, after all. I was surprised I was still sane. I soaked  in the warmth of the sun, then got swallowed in the shadow.

I couldn't see for a moment. I let my eyes adjust for a moment, but then I saw something. A figure of a human, crouched over a smoking fire pit. The fire was gone, only embers softly glowing. The figure was hunched over the fire, facing me. Its face- no, HIS face- had shadows over it. I could only see his glowing eyes.

"h...hello..?" I asked hesitantly. The man grunted in response. For some reason, he seemed farmiliar to me. I couldn't place from where, though...

"Do... do I know you?" I asked. He shook, as if he was laughing. Then, he straightened his body, sitting up straight. Shivers raced through my body as he sucked in an audible, wheezy breath.

"You don't know me, but I know you. Alice Rider," the man said in a gruff voice. He stood, the shadow dissipating. I could see his face clearly now. And I knew exactly where he was from. This was the man, peering down at me from the top floor of the hospital.

"Yes, that's right," He chuckled. "You HAVE seen me before."

With that last word, he turned on his heel. The man walked swiftly until he met the tree line. Then, he stopped, ans slowly turned around.

"Oh, by the way..." he growled. " My name is Gallin. I killed your mother." With that, he turned, and got swallowed into the forest.

My throat tightened. I couldn't process what he had said. My... My mother..? I finally noticed what he had been saying, and my mind went into over- drive.

"W..WAIT!!!" I screamed. I ran as fast as I could, the trees towering over me. The branches grabbed at my clothes as I ran into them. I was pushed into the forest. Then, the last light of the morning rays vanished into complete darkness.
