When I woke up all I could see was pure darkness. It was 2:56 am and I was woken by the same tree banging at my window. That night it was windier than ever before. I stood up and almost tripped over my stuffed bear. He had fallen off the bed. I picked up my bear and my flashlight, and headed downstairs. Every night when the tree woke me up I had to get up, go outside, and then I had to move the pot that held the tree away from my bedroom window. Since I slept on the first level my mom tree garden was always blocking the windows and making lots of noise. Once I got outside I moved the tree and realized this tree was different. All the leaves had fallen off. All the other trees were covered with bright green leaves. I moved the tree and noticed a strange wooden box tied around the highest branch. I set down my teddy bear and the flashlight. I climbed the tree branch by branch until I reached for the box and grabbed it. I looked down and I was quite far up. Just then something ran across the ground. It grabbed my flashlight and ate it. Grabbed my teddy bear. Down. The. Throat. It began eating my moms tree's leaves. I now understood why one of the trees was leafless. Although there were three un answered questions. Number one why was there a box on top of this tree. Number two what's inside it. Number three what on earth is this thing. I tried not to move or breathe so it couldn't see me. He seemed to disappear so I grabbed to box, stuck it in my shirt, and sprinted for the door. The creature followed. I got inside just in time. The creature was right there and ran into the door. I couldn't tell what it was. It was furry and brown with a large bird beak, black dragon wings, and eight eagle talons to pick up its prey. I was terrified. I couldn't tell mom and dad. They would think its from my brain damage and it was all in my head. I headed up to my room to open the wooden box. It had a rusted gold hinge and beautiful wooden carvings. I got into my room. I looked out the window to make sure this creature wasn't near. The coast was clear, so I decided to open the box. The box almost glowed a golden color as I opened it. Inside was a golden locket. It looked like an ordinary locket that maybe belonged to my mother so I decided to give it to her in the morning. I put it on her dresser and went back to bed. In the morning she was wearing the necklace making pancakes for my dad and I. "Thank you for finding my locket son" she said.
"Your welcome mom" I said. She turned around her eyes solid white. My dad was terrified so he left the room to call 911. "Mom are you okay" I asked her. No response. She turned towards me and whispered the words "Your mother is gone." I screamed as she opened the locket. Streaks of black and gold light chased me up to my room. I don't remember what happened then because I passed out. I woke up in a pitch black room and could only see through a small hole. The creature was there too. He said "Mess with the lockets secrets, you mess with my spirits." Just then tons of light poured in the room. It was still black but I could see my house on the other side of the "door". It seemed to be from my mothers perspective. She was running. Running away from something. I looked over and the creature was gone. I looked back and saw the creature eating my fathers lifeless body. His blood soaked the flowers he laid in. I screamed for my mom to watch out but I was too late. All I could see was blood running down the side of this mysterious door to the real world. Just then the door disappeared. Pitch black. Again. I heard cries. Screams. All I know is that I could feel the life leave my body but I was trapped. No heaven. No god. No afterlife. No beauty. My soul was forever trapped in a polished gold locket.
