Chapter 3: Blast from the past

Edited.....

Queenie pushed her cart inside the supermarket, her Mama was throwing her a big cookout and party for all her accomplishments, inviting all the people who knew her. When Queenie was going to school, she was picked on, bullied. As she strolled through the different aisles, she realized she was going to see a lot of old faces, even faces she didn't want to see.

She was so busy choosing tomatoes, that she didn't notice the man watching her. The stranger knew who she was. She was known back then as everybody's favorite punching bag. As he watches her push her cart through the produce section, he stood in awe, looking at how beautiful she had gotten.

Who knew, he thought as he followed her. "Belinda, Belinda Adams!" he exclaimed. She hadn't heard that name in years. Turning around, she came face to face with a caramel-colored guy.

"Do I know you?" she asked, unbothered that he knew her name. The guy chuckled, "yes. We went to school together. Can't believe you forget about little old me," he said placing his hand over his heart like he was hurt.

She looked at him closely, but she just couldn't remember his face. "Sorry, but you don't look familiar," she said as she continues to push her cart but the man followed her. "Reggie Williams," he said, this time she remembers. She had a small crush on him, but he was Latoya Jackson's boyfriend at the time and Queenie hated her as much as Latoya did.

"After you finish here, let's go to the café. I hear they make the most amazing chocolate cake," he said, she nodded and continued shopping.

Queenie and Reggie sat side by side at some upscale café. As a child, she wanted to come here, but her parents couldn't afford a glass of sparkling water. She and Reggie were conversing about how their lives turned out.

"So tell me, how is the city treating Belinda Adams?" he asked, sipping on a glass of whiskey. Queenie just rolled her eyes. "You do know that I changed my name, right?"

He smiled at her, "I know, just like calling you Belinda," he answered.

She then went on to tell him about her life, what she had been up to. "How is Toya?" she asked him about the girl he dated through high school.

"We broke up," he said, drinking the rest of his whiskey and ordering for the next one. Queenie just looked at him, back then, Reggie and Toya were the 'it couple', everybody wanted to find love just like they did.

Guess things change.

"Really, you guys were like high school sweethearts destined for greatness," she said with a wave of her hand. Reggie knew that Belinda hated Toya.

"I don't know about the destined for greatness crap, but we were high school sweethearts. We were still together after high school, but she started talking about being tied down here. She wanted to travel, see new things, experience new cultures, and shit like that. I have no clue how long that lasted, but she came back pregnant for some punk in the city." She didn't believe she would see the day that they would break up.

"What about you? Have any crazies after you?"

Queenie was not about to tell him about Markus, she just going to play it like she never had anyone, "No. What did you do after she left?"

"Well, I went to college and got my degree. Now, I work as a broker," he said, Queenie was amazed.

"Yeah, yeah. Who would have thought Reggie Williams would go to college and actually finish?" he smiled flashing her his pearly whites.

People do change she thought. Bad Boy Reggie Williams going to college and getting a degree was a perfect example.

Clad in a blue and white dress, Queenie swayed to the music as everyone mingled and danced. Who knew there were so many people in Richmond who knew her. She really thought that she would have hated the party, but here she was, enjoying every bit of it. After years of being away from a place she called home, it felt good to be back. She was sipping on a cocktail when she saw Reggie on the stage with a microphone in his hand, singing one of her favorite songs. He even had a few words to say, "I just want to congratulate Belinda on her accomplishments and also want to say sorry for all the things I did to you in high school, forgive me," he said sweetly.

All heads turned to face her, shouting 'forgive him'. Even Kayden, who had an angry scowl on his face was waiting for her answer. She nodded since the words couldn't escape her lips. "This is for you," he said as he sang the rest of the song. The crowd applauds Reggie when got down from the stage and made his way to Queenie who couldn't stop smiling.

"Lovely performance," she said.

"Well, you know I always had a way to the lady's heart," he said while dusting invisible dust off his shoulders.

Was he talking about her?

He was centimeters away from her, she could feel his breath on her face. Her heart was racing and she knew he heard it. She was twenty- six years old, but she was acting like a sixteen-year-old about to get their first kiss. She looked at him, he was looking at her lips. She felt like she was losing oxygen every time he closed the gap between them, making it even harder for her to breathe. Their lips were centimeters away from touching. The crowd was getting impatient, so they shouted 'kiss her', and so he did. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Kayden exiting the party, but she didn't care as she continued to kiss the man who once haunted her dreams.
