"ANNA," Joan, my step-mother, yelled for me from downstairs.

"WHAT," I screamed back, "I'm trying to get dressed!!"

She then said something that I couldn't quite make out, oh well, it probably wasn't important anyway. When I get dressed and ready, while I'm still upstairs, I hear the phone ring. I also hear Joan answer it.

What she says next makes my knees weak, and I almost fall.

"...He's d-dead," Joan says in a questioning tone, "Dale, is d-dead?"

I run downstairs and when she hangs up she looks at me and starts telling me that this is all my fault. I couldn't listen to it anymore, so, I ran back upstairs and locked myself in my room long enough to pack a few things.

'I'll just go to my friend's house,' I thought to myself.

I grabbed my phone, a couple shirts, and a few pairs of pants, oh and a picture of my dad, Dale Grier, otherwise known as the best person in the world. When I stuff all my things into my school bag, I run downstairs, past Joan, and get out the door and start walk-run to my friend's house. About halfway there, I hear a car behind me. I turn around and it's Joan.

I look around, then an ally-way catches my eye and I run down it without her seeing me. As I'm running, I look behind me to see if she's following me. When I turn back around, it feels like I hit a brick wall, but it was a person. I am starting to get really dizzy when I try to stand up, so the person I (literally) ran into, got up before me and helped me up.

"What are you doing out here," the person asked, I'm assuming it's a 'he'.

"I-I I'm running away from my step-mother," I told him.

"Well, do you need somewhere to stay for the night until you get a permanent living situation," he asked.

"I-I don't think I should...," I got cut off by my step-mother running down the alley-way, in a hurry, I said, "Yes, I'll go with you, just get me out of here!"

There was another exit at the other end of the alley-way, so, he grabbed my hand and we ran to the other opening. When we get past the other opening, we run down the street for about 2 blocks until we get to what I'm assuming is his apartment.

"Come on, " he said, " we have to get inside."

"Okay," I complied.

Once we get inside, I'm exhausted, and he could tell.

"Sit down for a minute," he said, "I'll get you some water."

"Hey, wait a minute," I said in a quiet voice, "what's your name?"

"Michael, what's yours," he asked.

"Oh, mine's Anna," I said, "wait, what's your last name, you look really familiar."

"Clifford,"he said

I almost died.
