"Chris, mom told me not to tell you this because she didn't want you to worry but I just had to."
My body awakened at hearing the voice of my brother, and I intently listened.
There was a long pause before Scott spoke again.
"She was flying to Connecticut for a funeral for one of her friends from college and the plane crashed."
I froze. All thoughts in my mind stopped.
Scott sniffed back a few tears before continuing.
"Chris... mom is in the hospital in Connecticut. She's in serious condition."
Scott just sat there in silence.
He wished Chris was awake so he find comfort in moms situation just as Chris had always done.
After a few minutes of painful silence, Scott spoke again.
"She has a collapsed lung, and the hospital is looking for a kidney donor." Scott croaked.
With that my heart burned.
It burned with anger, that I couldn't see her.
I felt regret, that if I haven't driven so carelessly I wouldn't be stuck here away from her.
I felt sad, my heart wept.
"They said that if they don't have an organ to transplant, her days will become numbered."
How about you donate your kidney, you blasted idiot?
If I was awake I would donate my kidney in an instant if it meant keeping mom alive.
I have to be awake for her.
She needs me.
I need her.
The words danced in my mind as I tried to move my betraying body.
I tried to shift around but it felt like my whole body was frozen over, like Cap.
Then suddenly, my foot moved.
I held onto that movement and was able to open my eyes.
I wheezed and looked around me, but no one was there
Oh it felt so good to be awake and alive.
I slowly sat up, and saw Scott walking towards the door with a cup of water.
Once he spotted me he dropped the cup of water and let out the girliest scream ever
"AHH CHRIS YOU'RE AWAKE!"
He rushed to my side.
I gave him a tired, half hearted smile before slapping him up side the head.
"Ow, what was that for?"
"WHY CANT YOU DONATE YOUR KIDNEY?" I screamed, ignoring the nurses that came and bustled around me, trying to get me to lay down.
"I don't know, I guess I never thought about that." Scott said rubbing his head.
"Idiot." I mumbled before turning to a star stuck nurse.
"How fast can you remove my kidney?"
