At lunch Alicia and I looked for Devonté who was supposed to get me my lunch. We searched over the many heads in the cafeteria but he was no where in sight. Looking down at Alicia's tray, seeing mashed potatoes with cheese and chicken breasts made me wish that I had just joined the line. Now I was here being tortured with the smell while I continue to scan the room. I was so caught up in my search that I didn't realize when someone had approach us.
"Hey" he said giving us a perfect smile while staring at Alicia with a gleam in his eyes.
"Uhmm hi" I answered not sure of who he is and not sure why he had approached us.
"Your Macy, right?" He said it more like a statement than a question. "Hi Alicia" he said nervously while I glanced back and forth at them both. With her pretending to not see what I was doing.
"Yea I am and you are?" I said sounding a little rude, don't blame me, blame my stomach which I was having a internal conflict with.
"Oh am sorry, am Ken Thompson, Devonté's cousin. He's busy at the moment and he didn't want to have you wait on him so he asked me to get your lunch for u" he said while he held a tray in his hand, looking at it then back at me.
"Thank you" I said gratefully. The wait was finally over though maybe I would wait a little longer to see me. Uhmm well I must be very hungry to say that, its not like its true.
We stayed in that position for couple seconds with each of us staring at different directions. No one said anything and Ken's idea of whistling to break the silence made it worst. Awkward.
"So...umm...how about you two come and join us at our table" he said while pointing towards the table. Which held the jocs and a couple of cheerleaders.
"Are you sure about that? We're not really on the same side with that status" she said while staring at the cheerleaders.
"True...plus we don't want to intrude" I said quickly.
"Yea I see what you are saying but you're my guests so come on" he said while motioning us to follow us with his head.
We walked behind him timidly especially Alicia, I was trying to maintain a confident look but her walking closely to me and fidgeting made me lose some of my confident stide. It felt strange as we made our way to the big table in the middle while other tables slightly smaller surrounded this one. We received couple glares and surprized faces from neighbouring tables but we received more of those faces when we actually arrived at the table. They all stopped talking and stared at us with mixed expression while I felt like a bigger alien other from being new at the school.
"Everyone this is Macy.." He said but trailed off.
"Oh the new girl" one of the boys said with a mischievous smile.
"Yes the new girl" Ken continued." I'm sure you all know Alicia " he said while he showed us the two empty seats. Giving them a small pat gesturing us to sit. We said hi to everyone, they all stared at us in silence with unreadable expressions. Even more awkward.
After a couple seconds of silence which had become nerve racking someone decided to break the silence.
"Hey am Ricky Martin, nice to meet you" he said while extending his arm to me. I shook his arm which from my observation he worked out for he had a tight grip on my hand.
"Hi, same here" I said briefly not knowing how to deal with all the piercing eyes that were still on us.
Surprizingly the stares stopped as everyone mood changed into something of a warmth. They started talking and engaged us in their conversation until we all were laughing and made silly comments. We were talking and having a blast until Alicia gave me a look hinting me to turn around. We turned around and saw Tiffany and her friend Tia Merry, a slender built, tall, red head with a pair of curious brown eyes looking down at us.
"Why are you sitting here?" Tiffany asked while maintaining a intense glare on me.
"Ken said we could sit here" Alicia said nervously while trying to not meet their glares.
"Really now?" She asked while looking at Ken with a mixture of anger and surprize.
"Yea I did, is it a problem?" He asked turning to face her completely.
"You need to take your trays and find another table" she said ignoring Ken's question, returning her glare to me.
"Suppose we don't?" I asked bravely standing. I could hear couple mumbling at the table and felt a slight tug on my arm from Alicia.
"You don't want to get on my wrong side so just save yourself the trouble and be on your way" she said taking a slight step forward.
The environment became intense as we both stared at each in disgust and couple persons at the other tables paid attention to us looking from her to me and vice versa.
"Macy let us just leave" Alicia said while tugging my arm.
I looked at her then at Tiffany and Tia who kept their glares at both of us or particularly me.
"Yea whatever" I said while taking up my tray. Realizing that she wasn't worth it.
"Yes Macy listen to your friend. Maybe you'll be able to manage at this school after all" she retorted with a smile tugging at her lips.
I kept my pace normal as we headed to another table. I could hear her laughing with Tia probably believing that she has won. Its too early to get into trouble. I guess. While we made ourselves comfortable we saw Ken plant himself in front of us and made himself comfortable. Alicia and I both stared at him and then at each other.
"Am sorry about Tiffany's behavior" he said apologetically. "She can be... something else at times" he continued.
"Yea something else, that's a nice way to put it" I said sarcastically rolling my eyes while looking the other direction.
"Yea I know, well she became worst after her and Devonté..." He trailed off as th lights went out.
Everyone began talking loudly complaining about the situation until they were silenced by the thunder and sudden rain. The atmosphere became dark and cold quickly as the cheers and excitement before disappeared. Though it was raining, it was dark and I was getting cold my mind went back to the sentence Ken didn't finish. What exactly happened between them. Was there a "them"? Why am I thinking about it? When am in a situation like this.
The lights began flickering on and off. Shadows began appearing everywhere and students began screaming and we all headed to the door which fortunately was close. Great. We all clung to each other as the shadows got bigger and closer. Then there was a loud sound as that of a siren's which made the glass shattered into million pieces unto the ground. A large gust of wind then blowed in that sent shivers down my spine that made me cling unto Alicia. I thought that was the worst part until the sound came back and the room became smoky.
Wow....that was hard to write. I didn't want to leave a cliff hanger but it seems that I did. Oops.
