Alycia
It was 4am. my alarm went off for me to get up. ‘five more minutes’ I thought. my alarm didn’t obey me. slowly, I got out of bed. I grabbed my clothes and headed for the shower. I peeled off my clothes and there it was, a black feather the size of my forearm, I tossed it in the trash. I got all my chores done with just enough time to get Rixon. I walked our short cut to his house. I always felt at home here but today it felt odd like I was being watched. I finally made it to his house. I knocked on his door to see his familiar face, his “aunt debbie.
“hello Debbie, um... I’m here for Rixon.” I was aware of my awkward tone, Debbie was like a mom so why was I feeling awkward?
“he’ll be right down,” she said, then yelled upstairs for Rixon. after listening to the boy upstairs, shuffling around, he shot down the stairs, he saw me and grinned.
“hey Alycia.” I looked at my best friend, he was gorgeous, any girl could see that, but he was a friend, almost like a brother. despite the fact that he was drop dead gorgeous. him opening his arms for a hug snapped me back to reality. his face was solemn, his lips a sad line, like he had lost his best friend over night. if only, I could use a break from Jodi some times. sometimes? all the time.
I hugged him.
"ready?" I said, stepping back.
"yeah," he went out of the room, probably getting his stuff.
we were back in the woods in mere minutes.
“Rixon, you look like crap, what happened?”
“not enough sleep.” he said. I knew that was only half of it.
“and..” I tried again.
“does it matter?” he asked.
“forget it,” i said, sheepishly.
“ let’s get going,” he starts walking and I touch his back and he freezes.
“don’t touch me.” he says sternly.
“Rixon, I want to talk.” I plead.
“no Alycia,” he yelled. he walked off. leaving me alone. Rixon was gone.
“Rixon!!” no answer. “Rixon,” still no answer.
* * * * *
“you’re late,” Mr. Alder said, accentuating the t like he always did.
“sorry Mr. Alder,” I said looking down.
I took my seat in the back where Rixon should be next to me. he wasn’t there.
“screw you Rixon, I don’t need you.”
“what was that miss Roan?” Mr. Alder asked.
“nothing just muttering curses to Rixon.”
“Please do so inside your deranged mind.” he gave me a heart filled grin. after the grin had vanished, he continued on with his lecture.
the day was a breeze. science was science, social studies was boring, though, without the screwed one. math was simple. I walked home through the woods as usual. I heard someone in the trees.
“hello?” I called out.
Rixon dropped from the trees, landing gracefully in front of me. I gasped.
“Ri-Rixon... you have the sudden ability to climb trees now?”
“no.”
then a single dark feather the size of a forearm fell from behind him. and I flashed back to this morning. the black feather from me, the gray from Rixon. ‘what’s happening?’ I think as he grabs the feather quickly, examining it, as if it was some kind of new treasure.
