"Cameron, you can't." Aaron begs his best friend as he hurries along behind him, determination makes Cameron takes in a deep breath as he stops walking and abruptly turns to face Aaron. His jaw is clenched and his eyes blaze with anger, his face softens slightly when he sees the desperation on Aaron's face.
"Why shouldn't I?" Cameron asks hotly. "Why shouldn't I go right up to Taylor and make him pay for what he did? As if you don't have people who love you, who'll defend you? Why should he get away with it?"
Aaron's heart skips at Cameron's words but he can't let himself be distracted from the task of quite literally defusing his friend.
"Because he'll go right to the headmaster and you'll get thrown out!" Aaron exclaims, trying make his hot-headed friend see reason. If Cameron were to get kicked out, Aaron would be alone and that is a fate worse than what he currently has to endure. He'll take a thousand of Taylor's verbal jabs, a million barely dodged fireballs that singe his skin than to be completely and utterly alone without anyone in his corner.
Taylor is aware of his position of power, he knows that Aaron would do anything to make sure that Cameron isn't kicked out. That he would prevent Cameron from retaliating because Cameron is his only friend.
He's the only person in the entire school that befriended Aaron when he was first thrust into a life he didn't ask for. Since his arrival Cameron and Aaron have been best friends, from the first moment they met, they have been inseparable. Aaron is aware of the fact that he is only allowed to sit with the popular students because of Cameron. They tolerate his presence because they crave Cameron's.
If the headmaster had been anyone else he would show preference towards Cameron but his ability to stay neutral was what won him his position. He does not care if Cameron is from a powerful family, he does not care that the talents that Cameron possesses are completely unique and almost impossible to come by, it is unheard of to be able to control all of the elements. The school has a strict no violence policy, they adhere to a stringent code that teaches control of ones emotions above all else.
Taylor is smart and he walks a fine line, he's careful to not break the no violence rule. He uses their training classes to 'accidentally' launch balls of fire too close to Aaron. He laughs at Aaron's weak fireballs, barely strong enough to light a match. Taylor is of the opinion that Aaron shouldn't even be at the school, it was only because of his great-great grandfather that he was even allowed to begin training. He was the last person before Cameron to command control of the four elements. He also knows that his abuse of Aaron is the one thing that can make Cameron lose his temper to the point of violence. He would love to get Cameron thrown out and increases his chances of being chosen.
Cameron closes his eyes and sighs, Aaron is right. No matter how much he might want to teach Taylor a lesson, he also doesn't want to be expelled. The thought of it makes him sick. He wants to be a hero more than anything in the world. He wants to be one of the select few that is entrusted to defend the Earth, only a few from the school will be given that honor and Cameron will do anything to make sure he's one of them. People believe that he's a shoe in because of his special abilities but Cameron knows that's not true. He has to prove himself worthy of the position, he's not perfect. He has a hard time controlling his anger and that is something that can prevent him from being chosen.
Aaron finally relaxes because he was able to calm Cameron down before he did anything stupid. He would never forgive himself if Cameron's talents went to waste because of him. He knows he would never be chosen to be a hero but he wants to become stronger because even if he's not a hero it's still beneficial to be strong and able to defend yourself.
