you looked me in the face... & you told me everything I wanted to hear.

EXTENDED...

"Are you getting high? Off coke?" Iris's voice cracked as she snatched the rolled up dollar from his hand. Her eyes dropped to the case on the table, the fine white lines laid out, clear as day as to what it was. "What the fuck, Jasiah?!" Her voice rose as her eyes widened. she didn't want to believe it, but the truth was in her face. Her voice shook, but her hands didn't when she shoved him hard in the chest, pushing him back.

"Man—" He muttered, sucking his teeth & backing away before she could push him again. "Come on Iris. We can talk about it before you start putting yo' hands on me na'."

She stared at him like she didn't even recognize him before she continued. "I thought you were sober the whole time we been together! Did you lie to me, nigga?!"

"No I ain't lie to you man!" He shouted back in shame & frustration. "Fuck! I relapsed after jail! You was gone, & I was in this bitch barely making it through the fucking day! Youn' know how it felt sitting next to you in that bed every day not knowing if you was coming back. I was losing my fucking mind."

Her hand shook as she wiped a tear from rolling down her cheek. "So you got high?"

"Yea... I got high." He said finally. No more excuses. Just the ugly truth laying bare between them. "It was the only thing that made me feel numb enough to breathe, but it never changed the way I felt about you. I just needed it to get by."

Iris looked down at it again, seeing what it meant, everything that it threatened in their relationship. The trust they built, the baby laying in their bed & the future they swore they were building together after getting engaged.

Then she said it. "Let me see your prescription paperwork." Her voice dropped so low it nearly disappeared. The room went dead silent then.

Jasiah didn't answer right away, it took him a moment. "Why?" He asked, barely tilting his head to the side. But his eyes told on him before any paperwork did, he already knew the answer as to why she was asking. He knew she knew. He was just stalling, buying time, as if it would make a difference.

Iris stared at him with her jaw tight, her eyes glistening with tears & betrayal as she restrained herself. Pain lived in her tone, & disappointment under every syllable that rolled off her tongue. "I need to see the paperwork, Jasiah." She wasn't asking, wasn't negotiating, & she didn't yell either.

He shifted his weight, looked away, feigning confusion like he didn't understand. "Why, though?" He asked, turning his hat to the back.

Her eyes didn't move from his. "I'm not gonna ask you again. I'll leave right now." She was asking for the truth, respect & proof that whatever trust they built hadn't just burned out in the background while she wasn't looking.
