WHAT WAS IT like to grieve a person that was still alive? Was it an overbearing sense of loss just like if someone had died? Even if their soul roamed the earth and they still lived in the same town? These are the questions that plagued Alexandria's mind as the events of last night played in her head.
Juanita Vasques was an accessory to murder. Rumors started quickly about Georgia along with Alex's abuela. Not everyone knew yet, but people talk and when a boring town has something this big happen, it's not small feat.
That innocent version of her abuela, Alexandria already began to mourn. Her heart aches at what the future could become.
Was going to school the right choice? Alexandria wasn't sure. She stared at her pale face in the mirror. She swallowed thickly at her own reflection as fear took over.
The girl couldn't help but wonder how Ginny was taking this. Was she scared? With a mother like Georgia, Alex could only assume she was taking this all head on. How Alex yearned for only a sliver of determination. She didn't really know how to survive. Not like those girls.
Maybe she'd get a taste now. To understand how to struggle.
The floodgates of agonizing thoughts took a break when Eliza, Alexandria's newest edition to the family walked in. She'd only found out about the girl about a month or two ago, yet given the circumstances, the two girls were already as close as could be.
"We just have to get through today, Alex. If you don't want to, we can stay home," Eliza suggested, the words hanging over Alexandria's head deliciously. The idea of staying home made her feel a sense of ease compared to the looming dread.
Then she thought about Ginny. She couldn't do this on her own. The girls had to be there for each other. So, despite the urge to bed rot and eat copious amounts of junk food, Alexandria finished getting ready.
Once they arrived at school, eyes glued to them. It wasn't because they looked good, or because they made a big entrance. Everyone knew. Everyone.
Alexandria had been stripped of any previous title besides the girl who'd grandmother was going to prison for being the help that killed Tom Fuller. She wasn't the girl who dated Maxine Baker's quiet brother, or the girl who occasionally hung out with the bro squad, or who showed up to school still quite recently with a sister by her side.
This was who she was. Now she just had to accept it.
Ginny had been walking the halls, coming head on. How would Alex approach her? Maybe Eliza would help. She seemed to be hawking the halls as her own personal bodyguard, maybe she'd be able to lighten the attitude.
Right when Alexandria went to open her mouth, Tucker Matthews decided to make a snarky comment to Ginny.
"Yo, Ginny! Your mom could murder me, and I'd say thank you," Tucker said practically announcing it to the whole hall. Luckily, Marcus came from the next hall over and slammed his body into Tucker's, slamming the annoying brat into his locker.
