"The body of superhero, Partygirl, was found lying dead in her bathtub today. An autopsy will be conducted today as to find the cause of her death. More on that tonight at ten." The newscaster said in his dull, monotonous voice that most have nowadays. It is a dull life for many. Crime has gone down 37% with the recent rise in superpowered beings. But that still left behind more powerful criminals. Ones who could wipe out a whole city if they so choose. But Pineville, Misouri wasn't one that many would think of attacking. Not because it had a great police force and city defenses. Not because it was densely populated by the super community. Not because it was a great weapons depot. In fact. The police force was five men and women who didn't want to be there. No supers lived there. No weapons were made. It was just... Not there. Unbeknownst to many. And those who do know about it. Well. Let's just say they live there. It's a nice town. Lgbt+ friendly. Lots of stores. Great economy. Very environmentally friendly. It's a great town it's just... A small one. And home to one, tearful girl.
"Cassidy!" Her mother shouted, unbeknownst to her that her daughter sat in front of her television, tears streaking her face. "Dinner time, dearest!" Cassidy looked up from the television towards her bedroom door. A laugh rang in and out of her mind. One of a friend, former schoolmate. A childhood crush. Cassidy turned off the television and, wiping away tears, she slowly trudged downstairs to the dining hall. She turned to her mother and the tears came rushing out in a stream.
"A-April died mom..." She said through tears. Her mother froze. April, she thought. Oh dear....
"N-no dear April's just fine. She's just probably hurt a bit."
"They're doing an autopsy today... She was in the bathroom..." Cassidy said sitting solemnly at the table. Her friend's laughter rang out once more. Cassidy shut her eyes tightly, her heart pounding in her chest. Her closest friend left when she were fourteen. And one year later she was found dead.
"Cassidy we can um... We can forget about April. We both know she had... enemies." Her mother had said. "This was going to happen sooner or later." Cassidy's breathing hitched. Sooner or later. Is that really what her mother thought of this? SOONER OR LATER!? Cassidy soon had a twisted grimace spreading across her face. A pill bottle was slid across the table to her. Her brother sat down. Two more bottles were slid down along with it. Cassidy's brother, Percy, sat next to her, a look of dispair replacing his usually happy facade.
"I saw the news. I think it's best you take your meds now so this all blows over. Alright bab?" He said in a gentle, quiet tone. Cassidy glared at him before grabbing the bottles. He was right. The medication would help a bit. But the sting would still be there. April would still be gone. She twisted the kids off each. Depression. Anxiety. Paranoia. Three pills a day that she dreaded. They never actually helped her. A glass was sat next to her filled with ice water. After quickly taking her pills she sniffled quietly.
"Do all supers die? I mean. I know April didn't have many invincibility powers, but she couldn't have died if she was a super right? They're immortal aren't they?" She said. "Or at least. They can get hurt but they should be able to live forever. Maybe she's not dead. Maybe she's in a coma. Or unconscious!" Percy and their mother sent nervous glances at each other before shaking their heads. "BUT THEY HAVE TO BE!"
"Sorry bab but they just don't live forever."
"But in my comic they-"
"Bab, those comics aren't real. Fake superheroes manufactured to give hope. It's unrealistic." Percy sighed and ran a hand through his hair. "I was kind of dreading a day like this. I knew you were excited about April being a super. But I knew she would be offed one day. I didn't think it'd be after just a year though. Listen Cassidy. She's not gonna live forever. None of the supers are. It's just a fantasy. Corporate crap."
"Xbox is corporate crap. The Today show is corporate crap. Ads on YouTube are corporate crap! Supers are real and they give hope to people! I know you're older and Sony believe in this stuff but it's true! Okay? It's true and just... You're full of crap okay?!" Cassidy shouted. Her mother shot her a glare and Cassidy sent the look back. It was a happy family before her twelfth birthday. The day she got her first Deadpool comic. The day she was hit in a car crash. The day her closest friend had pushed two cars out of the way to pull her out. The day she lost her best friend to the government. The day she was diagnosed with clinical depression and social anxiety disorder. The day her family changed for good.
Cassidy stood up from the table and threw her medication to the floor, only for the bottles to bounce slightly, not helping her get out much frustration. She kicked the table before walking out of the dining hall. And into the living room, slamming the door shut behind her.
She threw herself onto the couch and curled up, grabbing onto her hair and breathing shakilly. Stupid stupid stupid you had to do that didn't you. You had to yell and scream and continue didn't you. Now they're all mad and you're screwed. Greeaaaat job, she thought grabbing a pillow and shouting curse words at the wall. It was all crashing down around her. Family, friends, life itself. All of it was tearing apart at the seams. Crumbling and falling away. "I hate this..." She whispered, clinging to the pillow as if it was her my support. "I hate this... And life.... And me...
"I'm nothing good....
"I'm not extraordinary...
"I'm not super.....
"I'm no one...."
