Tree Roots and Dew Drops

Chapter 1

I ducked behind a bush as a car drove by. Ug! I HATE tracking jobs! Always sooooo much work. And for what? A new member to the family? But this job was different. And much more serious than any other normal tracking job. This changeling was WAY more important than what I want. I'm just a tracker, nothing more.
I heard a twig snap behind me. "Will you guys keep it down back there?," I whispered through clenched teeth. Rolling my eyes at the amateurs behind me, I pulled out my binoculars. "But Willow! We've been here for hours! When does the action start?" I turned around to face the red-headed idiot that had just spoken. "You’re lucky I even brought you two with me! I could have dumped you hours ago!"
Even though Steven (the red-headed dude) and Ivy with the HUGE purple eyes were a few years older than me, I still had command over them. It’s a ranking thing. I was more experienced than them, so Milady ordered me to bring them with me - you know, to get a few pointers. So I couldn't really leave them behind. But they don't know that do they...
"I told you before! It takes time and patience to be a tracker! Now keep it down!" This job was very important to the tribe. If we didn't succeed, our whole tribe could go into war!
I still don't get why I had to do it. But Milady says I'm one of her best... (gloating) but I personally think the other trackers were just too damn wimpy for the pressure. Like I mentioned before, the fate of our entire existance relies on this one little job.
There he is. Looking through the binoculars I could see right into his room. The rest of the house across the street was already dark. But this kid? He's a geek. So he stayed up late playing some dungeons and dragons game.
" That's him?" it was Ivy this time but, unfortunately, her hair got caught in a branch when the wind blew and she started howling. (Just my luck.) Typical girly girl. *rolls eyes* "Shut up! He will hear us!" I whispered fiercely.
"That’s impossible! All the way across the street?"
"Oh Steven, you idiot! His kind can hear much better than humans, remember?" I can't believe I'm stuck with these two! They're making my job so much harder!
I heard an owl hooting from behind the house. That’s. Just. Great. It was the retreat signal from Ryan. The other tracker. He's a bit more focussed than these two, but still an amateur.
"C'mon! Let’s get back to the truck..." I motioned the others backward. But, with their lack of experience and skill we were moving at the speed of, well, not lightning. Now we had to go back and wait another few hours before coming back and try again. Next time, I'm coming alone.
Back in the truck we all sat still and waited for all the trackers to come back. We were only five but they were taking forever! "Okay, we all back?" I said, making eye contact with every one of them, especially Matt. We've been friends since childhood! He was also the prince of our tribe. He was my fellow tracker and just as skilled as me. We were partners and we were both stuck with Steven, Ivy and Ryan. *rolls eyes again*
"Ryan! What happened? Why'd you given the signal?" Ryan looked confused for a second and I was getting ready to pound him when he started speaking. "He was on his way outside. He must have heard you. Maybe giving the code red signal wasn't the best idea." he lowered his eyes. "You guys were making a huge racked you know?" I looked at Matt. "You think I don't know that?” I gave Ivy and Steven a death glare. "Okay never mind. We just wait a while and then I go back." Steven's head shot up "Why do you get to go?" I just closed my eyes and started counting to ten. Yeah, I have a bad temper, but I’m working on it.
The rest of the time it was quite in the van. We were all tired. Finally it was midnight! "Okay, I'm going now. You guys stay here!"I evil eyed them. "Wait" I turned around to see Matt getting up. "I'm coming with you" I started saying something when he said "you are not strong enough to overpower him and then drag him back here alone remember? I have to help you carry him!"
Inside his room it was dark. Finally. He was in his bed sleeping peacefully. Before we came up we agreed to first wake him. Make sure he stays quite while he wakes up and then tell him what’s going on. Otherwise he will wake up the whole house! And we kinda are kidnapping him. We need him alive.
I switched on the light while Matt puts his own hand over the victim's mouth. He woke with a start but quickly settled down when he saw the knife at his throat. "Keep still and quiet and nothing will happen. Get it?" I said calmly. He nodded and matt slowly took away his hand. "What’s going on?" he whispered.
For a moment I was speechless. He had the most beautiful eyes. They were the purest blue. They looked almost supernatural. But, that's because they were. He's a changeling from the water clan. Matt saw my reaction and started talking to give me time to recover. He knew me so well! "We are here to take you home. I'm Matt and this is Willow Red. “When I heard my name I came back to reality and took my stand as leader.”c......come again?" the poor dude was so confused! "Okay, let me start at the beginning..."
"Your name is Dylan Waters....."
"Yeah duh! I know that. But that’s not my last name" he started speaking up but quickly shut up when he saw my face. I sighed. This was going to be a long night.
"So Dylan, do you know what a changeling is?” he looked taken back by this question but answered anyway.
"I think so."
I sat down on the chair behind me and made myself comfortable. "Okay, you are a changeling of the Water Nymphs. Your mother, Queen Ilaysa, brought you to this world when you were only a dewdrop. You are the prince, and turning what, 17? So it is time for you to return home and take your place at the throne, yadi yada yada......all of that dramatic stuff. And we are here to take you home. Capeesch?"
He actually took it better than I expected. He just..... Sat there. Oh wait.... Here it comes: he jumped for his cell phone and started yelling. But before he even finished the word "help" Matt grabbed him by the neck and pushed him down on the ground. He squirmed but I just got out my knife again and he shut up. I know it's harsh but it's for a good cause! "Listen, I know it’s hard to take it all in at once but you have to believe me!" we heard a thump on the roof and then a window breaking. Matt's eyes grew large. "You have to come with us NOW!” I whispered in his ears.
He started squirming again but we had no choice. We threw a sack over Dylan's head and Matt threw him over his shoulder. We climbed out the window and down the tree. We started running as fast as we could back to the van.
