We continued walking along the beach for about an hour when Henry all of a sudden stopped us. "Guys, it's hopeless, the kidnapper is just trying to trick us," Henry said. He leaned over and sat down on the beach, seeming defeated.
"Henry, we don't know that," I said, trying to comfort him, "If we just keep trying, we will-"
"What if we don't!" Henry exclaimed, suddenly enraged, "What if we're just out here chasing our tails and following that kidnapper's trap! Would Kayla really want us to be endlessly searching for her, never really going to find her? She wouldn't! She wouldn't want us to be doing something without a purpose! What if Kayla's dead?" Henry fell to the ground, tears forming in his eyes. "What if Kayla's already dead." He put his head in his hands, truly and absolutely defeated. Sobs started shaking his shoulders and Brian sat down next to him, placing his hand on his back.
"Henry, I haven't known you for long, but I know how much Kayla means to you," Brian said, "Kayla could very well be alive and well. It is just as likely for her to be waiting for us to come as her being dead. We just need to keep trying."
"But we've been trying for four months, Brian," Henry said, looking up, his eyes red with tears, "Four months we've been working our tails off to find her. The police gave up, our parents gave up. Why should we keep going?"
"Because we believe that she's out there," Lilith said, "And she is out there. Remember the texts? And now the shoe? She's okay, alive and well."
"But the shoe said that she's asleep and forever ours to keep," Henry said.
"What does that have to do with anything?" I asked.
"That could mean that she's dead, so we can take her," Henry said.
"Yes well," Lilith started, "But it could mean that the kidnapper is torturing her and she passes out a lot so we need to get to her sooner!"
"Way to be an optimist," Brian huffed. I playfully hit him and he just smirked at me.
"But," Henry started, "Let's just stop and think. We haven't found the building yet, and-"
"Let's just go home, okay?" I suggested.
"Okay," Henry sighed. We all got up and started back down the beach, when Henry's phone beeped. Then mine. Then Lilith's. Then Brian's. We all pulled out our phones and read the texts. Mine said almost home, like usual from Kayla. Then Henry's eyes widened.
"Guys, she said something more than almost home," Henry said.
"What did she say?" I asked.
"I'm almost home, baby. I love you, and don't stop trying. I'm almost home baby," Henry read. His eyes started welling up with tears of joy.
"We got this," I said, giving everyone a group hug, "We got this."
