Beep! Beep! Marissa's alarm clock sounded throughout her bedroom. She pressed the off button and sat up. Her shirt rode up as she stretched her arms in the air.I'm 20, she thought. She immediately predicted what Austin would say: In one year, you can legally drink! She laughed at the thought and crawled out of bed. Her hand reached for one of Austin's old t-shirts he left and a pair of denim shorts. Marissa pulled on a pair of boots and headed for the barn to take care of the animals.
"Happy birthday, honey," her mom greeted her in the kitchen.
"Hi, Mom," Marissa hugged her. Then she headed out the kitchen door to the barn.
The grass was tall enough to reach her legs and tickle them. "I definitely need to mow today," she sighed.
Jackson greeted her in the barn. "Happy birthday, sis." He hugged her and got back to work.
Marissa headed towards the horses and Rufus bounded towards her. Rufus is a fawn-colored Mastiff.
She began to take care of Sadie and Toby. Toby is Marissa's horse while Sadie belongs to Austin. Sadie stays at her farm since Austin couldn't take her with him. Marissa was the only person he trusted with his horse and she made sure to take extra care of Sadie everyday.
Once she wrapped up what she was doing, she tacked up Sadie to take her for a ride. Everyday she takes one horse for a ride so she isn't picking favorites. Sadie trotted through the pasture and the locket around Marissa's neck bounded up and down.
The sun was beating down on Marissa as she continued through the field. They eventually stopped by a big oak tree and Marissa let Sadie roam around while she relaxed in the shade.
Her mind was racing as soon as her back hit the familiar bark. She always stopped at this spot everyday.
"Why hasn't he come back?" she whined. Her fingers grasped the heart around her neck. She rubbed her thumb over his name and eventually moved it over to the latch on the side. The locket made a click and popped open. Inside sat the picture of her and Austin and his "I love you" note. The tears threatened to slip and she didn't have the strength to hold them back.
Sadie came over and nudged her nose against Marissa. She wiped her tears away and climbed upon Sadie to head back to the stables.
Marissa turned on the radio in the barn as she took off Sadie's saddle. The music rang through the speakers and her foot started to get a feel for the beat.
Well I wish I had some shoes on my two bare feet
And it's gettin' kinda cold in these painted on cut-off jeans
I hate the way this bikini top chafes
Do I really have to wear it all day? (Yeah, baby)Marissa put the saddle away and began full-out dancing at this point.
Bein' the girl in a country song
How in the world did it go so wrong?
Like all we're good for
Is looking good for you and your friends on the weekend
Nothing more
We used to get a little respect
Now we're lucky if we even get
To climb up in your truck, keep our mouth shut and ride along
And be the girl in a country songAny thoughts of Austin we're currently nonexistent as she danced along.
