QUANTICO, VIRGINIA,
FEDERAL BUREA OF INVESTIGATIONS OFFICE,
Present day...KATRIN'S P.O.V
Aaron Hotchner, a stoney faced man with dark hair and a totally expressionless face sits across from me in his office.
"Miss Coleman you do understand the people we deal with in this job... It isn't exactly pleasant" he says.
"All due respect sir," I lean forward in my plush leather chair, resisting the urge to wince as my back twinges with pain "but I've seen things far worse than the people you deal with do".
I am an arrogant arse...
"Speaking of what you've seen, I read your file" Aaron says it like it means he knows me
"And?" I cross my arms and rais a questioning eyebrow
"And I've been working here for a long time and not once has the answer "Not applicable" been written in the space for previous position in any files I've seen"
"I shouldn't even have a file here anymore"
"Why not?"
"Because I quit three years ago"
"After NICO?"
"yes, after that".
I am an über b-
"Your point sir?"
"My point is this; what position were you in the night the school went up and why doesn't it show up on any records?".
I laugh to myself and look at him
"Does it really fucking matter?"
"Yes it does"
"Why?. I mean, I have PTSD why, of all people, does the FBI want to offer me a job?"
"There is someone in this team you could learn from and he could learn from you. The bureau want you two to work closely together and see how each of you improves"
"Aaron Hotchner I'm not even a bloody agent anymore!" I slam my fist down on the table "you can't do this"
"Katrin what position were you in the night the school for blown up and 23 federal agents were killed"
"24"
"Excuse me?"
"It should have been 24".
There's heavy silence for a moment before I take a deep breath and speak
"The night we went into the school I was second in command. I was also alone, we all took a wing of the school. There were 24 wings and I went to the basement, I wasn't supposed to, but I did anyway and the bomb went off somewhere to the right of the school" I tell him, cracking my knuckles loudly to fill the silence that follows.
Aaron Hotchner slides a piece of paper across the table at me and waits a moment before following it with a leather wallet.
Uggghh!
"I don't want my stupid badge" I snap, sliding it back to him.
He catches it and spins it back in a swift flick
"Take it" he says and cuts me off before I can protest again
"Just come with us for one case and if its really as bad as you manage to make it sound you never have to set foot in a federal building again".
I think for a moment and finally, with frustration in my voice I snatch the wallet in my fist and snap the word "fine" through gritted teeth.
Then there's a quiet knock on the door and Aaron Hotchner turns to me
"Agent Coleman one last thing before introductions occur"
"Yes sir?"
"Call me Hotch"REID'S P.O.V
"Did you guys hear about the new agent?" Garcia inquires as she shuffles into the lift, wedging herself between Rossi and Morgan in front of JJ, Emily and I.
"What new agent?" I ask.
I find it hard to lie to them, but Hotch has specifically told me I can't let them know I know anything about her. Actually other than that I know nothing, the new agent is a girl and she resigned three years ago.
"Hotch wouldn't even give me a name so I could Google who it was, I wasn't even allowed to do a ViCap search" Garcia's face falls considerably and Emily sniggers beside me.
"This means we'll have an official eighth member of the team" Rossi says and Morgan frowns
"Isnt it a bit dangerous, for there to be that many profilers in the one room?"
I look down at my feet and remains silent as they continue chattering.
"Hey guys, maybe we'll finally outnumber the girls" Morgan says optimistically and a smile creeps across my lips.
And for prediction Derek Morgan, you get an F minus minus minus minus...
DING!
The elevator doors open and I walk out, quickly scuttling up the stairs and towards Hotch's-
"Spence!" JJ calls my name and I look over the railing at the team who are looking up at me with variations of confused expressions.
"Yeah?"
"Where are you going?" Emily asks
"Oh, um, Hotch just asked me to file some stiff over the weekend and I have to give it to him today so, yeah. I'll be down in a minute" I explain, not waiting for their response before I quickly walk up to Hotch's office door.
I knock three times and the door flies open, Hotch practically yanking me in by my tie before locking the door again and turning to me.
"She's excessively hostile. Choose your words carefully Reid" he warns before walking over to his desk.
A small birdlike figure sits curled up awkwardly in one of the leather swivel chairs and she slowly extends her legs before standing up, being almost careful about the way she straightens her spine.
I notice Hotch watching carefully as she does so, like he's worried she might break or something.
"Katrin Coleman this is Agent Spencer Reid, Reid this is Agent Coleman"
"Its doctor" she whispers it, almost like an undertone to my voice as I speak and I smile.
She's actually quite tall when she stands up, she's thin and has long waves of dark hair that, even tied up in a high pony tail dangle at her waist with loose shorter bits, almost like a fringe, hanging out and framing her face. They tickle her jawline- and she has one hell of a jawline on fleek- and make her smokey blue eyes seem brighter.
I smile when I notice she dresses a lot like me, the buttons on her shirt done almost mismatched looking, the last one struggling to reach the hole.
"Hello Spencer" she says quietly
"Hello Katrin, you can um, you can call me Spence....or Reid, whichever you prefer" I stammer awkwardly
"Well which do you prefer? I mean, it is your name"
Er. . .
"I don't mind" I shrug and look at Hotch for what to say but he steps in for me
"You're actually quite similar" he says and she glares at him before stalking over to the window
"How so?"
"Well you both have eidetic memory, Katrin your IQ is 186 Reid's is 187 you both hold three PhDs, Reid you hold two BAs, Katrin holds one"
She turns around to look at me and frowns, she doesn't speak though, just stares at me for what seems like ages before Hotch finally says
"Reid you can go join the others now" and I walk towards the door.
"Spence" Katrin's voice pulls me up short
"I'm studying for a fourth" she says quietly.
And I instantly know that is the first impression Katrin Coleman will ever make on me.
"So am I" I say before slipping out the door and half walking half jogging down the stairs and into the conference room.
