I hear Tris's voice creep up behind me.
"I'm sorry."
I feel a little taken aback because there hasn't been anything she's done wrong.
"For what?"
"For being such a bitch. I mean all you've been doing is try to make up with me and fix whatever friendship we had before and all I've been doing is avoiding you and being difficult."
"Seriously, you don't have to apologize. I understand why you've been avoiding me and such, but all I want is to at least be friends again."
"Me too, and if you don't mind I'd like to go on that walk sometime..."
I can't help but feel a little excited that she wants to go on a walk because all I've been trying to do is rekindle our friendship and I've been hitting wall after wall but now I feel like I've finally broken a wall down.
"Great. How about I pick you up at 6 so I have time to finish some homework?"
"Sounds like a plan. Oh, I realized I've never given you my address or phone number." Tris says with a smile on her face. She barely smiles nowadays so when she does, it's a refreshing feeling knowing that she isn't completely shut down from me.
School today is no different than any other day. Class after class, lecture after lecture, work after work. The only break we really get is lunch, and for some, gym. After several brutal hours of school, lunch finally arrives. As usual, Tris walks in and sits in the corner where no one could possibly see her. I so badly want to get up and sit next to her but if I do, all the people I've turned down will be gunning for her. All I do is block out all conversations and focus and what I should do to repair my friendship with Tris. So many years of knowing each other shouldn't go to waste, especially over an unpreventable reason-- Marcus's job relocation. Lunch goes by smoothly until I hear Tris's name out of Marlene's mouth.
"Uriah, I'm sorry I didn't say anything to help you with Tris."
Uriah's response comes slowly,
"It wasn't your fault. You didn't know what to do."
I could feel the tension around the group strengthen, like the wrong words out of anyone's mouth could cause everyone to explode.
"What happened yesterday?" I ponder.
Uriah is the one that answers my question.
"Well these idiots think it's funny to bully Tris yet they have no motive. She's done nothing wrong." He says gesturing to Zeke, Christina, Shauna, and Lynn.
"Uriah's right. You shouldn't have done that just because she's new." Will pipes up.
"Just because I've said some mean words to her doesn't make me a bully." Christina says.
"Hmm. Screaming profanities, calling her a freak everyday, and shoving her to the ground doesn't make you a bully? In my book that sounds pretty damn close to a bully to me! And Lynn, taking a video of the whole thing? Really? How much lower can you get. If anything, Tris is the higher person than all of you because she has to put up with your shit every. single. day. So unless you, Zeke, Shauna, and Lynn get your asses up and apologize to her sometime, I'm excusing myself from you guys." Marlene storms out of the cafeteria to who knows where, and this whole fight keeps going.
"Damn she took it too seriously." Zeke says.
"She's not all wrong. You guys should go apologize but then again we're at fault too for not stopping you. So I say we all go apologize, but not all at once." Will says.
Uriah stands up to look for Tris, but she's already gone.
"Lynn. Let me see the video."
Lynn hands me her phone as the video starts playing. It starts off as Tris resting her forehead on what seems to be her brother's shoulder, crying. And after about two minutes was when everyone passed by and started yelling profanities at her, but Tris's brother finally decided enough is enough and talked back at them. Uriah also went to defend her, and I'm guessing this is where the tension began. Tris ran off with red puffy eyes, and her brother followed suit.
I shake my head. Are these people really my friends? Stooping down to Peter's level for self entertainment? I silently hand Lynn her phone back and walk away shaking my head. At least my next class is with Tris, but what sucks about it is that we sit nowhere next to each other, and barely have time to talk. At least we have one other class-- Pre Calculus together where she sits in front of me. After the period ends, I only get to exchange a few words with her, which was confirming if I was picking her up later.
The school day ends and I suddenly feel happy. Unlike most days, I go home with nothing planned but now I have something to do-- with Tris. I just hope all goes well and we don't end up yelling at each other again. It's only 5:30 but I decide to make my way over to Tris's house. Might as well go earlier if I'm already done with all my homework.
When I knock on Tris's door it isn't Tris that opens it.
"Hey, you must be... Four. I'm Caleb, Tris's brother."
From his tone I could tell he was hiding something that he wanted to say, but I don't push it. I shake his hand and walk inside.
"Is Tris here?"
"Yeah but she's actually sleeping now. Long day at school."
"I was hoping she'd be awake.. We were supposed to be going on a walk." I reply.
"Oh I'm sure she'll be awake soon, she wouldn't forget about you."
"Yeah, hopefully." I say a little unconfident. There's only fifteen minutes until six and I'd imagine it take longer than that for her to get ready.
"Look." Caleb says to get my attention, then continues. "I know you care about Tris, and I know she cares about you. So please, when I leave tomorrow she's going to need someone to be there for her. I've tried to protect her from all those bullies and even though she puts up a front she really gets bothered by it. Please help her and don't let her get hurt, if not for me then for her."
"I know what she's been through, but not to the full extent, and I saw what happened yesterday because someone had taken a video. I promise that I'll try my best to protect her when you're gone, and to make sure nothing bad happens."
"That's good to know, because I'm certain she'll become somewhat more distant when I leave for college again tomorrow. Just promise me you won't hurt her again either, Four."
"I promise." This is a promise I intend to keep, and if I fail to keep it, I wouldn't forgive myself.
One awkward minute later, Tris comes down the stairs looking ready even though it's still 5:50 in the evening.
"You're already here?" Tris questions
"Yeah, I came around 5:30."
"Oh... I literally just woke up five minutes ago," She says as she turns to her watch. "Did you want to go now?" Tris continues as if she had read my mind.
"Sure. Let's go." I say, as she advances towards the door. "Before we start any other conversation, I also want you to know that Caleb knows your real name.
"He does? I guess that's what he was refraining from telling me because he called me Four. It's fine that he knows it and I'm okay with him calling me that as long as he doesn't tell anyone else."
"That's good to know, I promise he won't tell anyone if he keeps your secrets as well as he keeps mine."
We make our way to nowhere in specific, stopping to talk about our old childhood memories when I hear someone yell out "Tris!" Who is that?
